    Nobody in a sober state of mind should be flying into or over Russia. Airlines have just now halted flights, but for only thirty days. As if things will be better in that timeframe.

        I still don't have a clear understanding of the sequence of events here. Was Russia an alternate on their flight plan? If not, why Russia?

            The preliminary report is out. It states that the flight lost GPS and DME navigation (jammed by Russia?) and could not perform the intended landing, then opted to return to Baku. During the return they were hit by Russian AA (the report does not state this) and the main damage seems to have been the loss of al hydraulics. They attempted to land with differential thrust and stabilizer trim alone, much like United 232, and much like United 232, they could not correct a 35deg roll before landing.
