  • Helicopter Crashes - Wisconsin EMS/BC Hydro

    Two recent helicopter crashes.

Madison, Wisconsin - EMS (Sorry Brian) American Eurocopter EC13 . Tough situation for those who live to protect lives, to lose theirs.
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A medical helicopter dropped off a patient and then crashed shortly after it took off on its return flight to Madison, killing the surgeon, nurse and pilot on board, officials said Sunday.

The University of Wisconsin Hospital Med Flight crew went down about three miles from the La Crosse airport, from which they departed late Saturday, Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Elizabeth Isham Cory said in a statement.

The wreckage was found early Sunday, and preliminary reports indicate the helicopter may have struck a hill or some trees, said Margaret Van Bree, the hospital's chief operating officer.

Killed were surgeon Darren Bean; nurse Mark Coyne, 53; and pilot Steve Lipperer, 39, she said. All three lived in Madison. Bean's age was not immediately available.

Cranbrook, British Columbia - Bell 206 Jet Ranger: 3 on helicopter and one on ground killed when helicopter crahes.

CRANBROOK, B.C. — A helicopter carrying three passengers crashed in flames in a quiet residential area of Cranbrook, B.C. Tuesday afternoon, killing those on board and a pedestrian out for a walk.

“It's just smoking rubble now,” said one resident.

The accident took place shortly after 1 p.m. MT in the Kootenay region's largest city.

The scene of the crash is about a 10- to 15-minute walk from downtown.

RCMP Corp. Chris Faulkner said he arrived at the crash scene just a few minutes after the accident.

“There was some debris in the street, and the fuel was burning for about half a block. A lot of people saw what happened. They were just dumbfounded,” he said.

Corp. Faulkner said eyewitnesses told him the helicopter had been hovering low over the area moments before the crash, perhaps surveying possible routes for Hydro lines in a nearby new subdivision under construction. The Bighorn chopper had been hired for the flight by B.C. Hydro.

    Fate Takes Out iPod Wearer

I'm speculating that he was wearing an iPod (or equivalent) based on the following. Apparently, he didn't hear the helicopter until it was almost upon him. A tragic twist of fate. No one gets out of bed in the morning expecting a helicopter to drop from the sky on top of them.

Isaac Hockley, a friend of Mr. Otieno, said the man was walking to the mailbox to post a letter to his parents, who live in Kenya. He was wearing headphones at the time, which might explain why he didn't hear the low-flying vehicle sputtering just 50 metres in the air above him at 1:03 p.m.

“If he would have jumped just five feet, he would have missed it,” Mr. Bautz, 63, said.
