    Egypt Air 990 dived into the Atlantic Ocean at close to the speed of sound. Both its CVR and FDR were readable. There is still some hope yet that data might be extracted from these black boxes.

        BEA released their interim report on the accident.



        A very interesting read, though there are some fators that have not been explained or covered.

        But the basic thread is:

        Poorly planned flight that was not within any specific company or regulatory guidelines and the Crew may not have had the required experience or training to carry out some of the manouvers.

        Request to carry out various manouvers is denied by ATC as the flightplan filed did not allow for that.

        Some tests were accomplished, but they decided to carry out an Alpha Floor test during the planned approach and then do a a touch and go and then to proceed to Frankfurt.

        Alpha Floor test is commenced during the approach at 3000ft. (Airbus procedures indicate the test should be carried out at FL140). One point to note the Hori Stab automatically moved to 11.6 deg nose up and remains there until impact.

        During test control is lost with aircraft airspeed dropping below 40kts.

        Reading the report there appears to have been some issue with the AoA sensors. So perhaps there is some malfunction in this sytem but this is not discussed in length.

        There are also some fail messages the occur, but these are not explained.

        So initially it would appear the primary cause was poor planning by inexperienced crews carrying out a high risk test leading to loss of controlled flight at an altitude from which recovery was not possible.

        Intrestingly the eye witness reports when put togeather corroborated the evidence.

          At speeds >100 knots, water is almost a solid. How the aircraft hit the water is critical. If the aircraft was not in a nose up attitude, damage would be extensive.
          We had an example at Schipol at an aircraft striking tail down with insufficient airspeed. Had the tail taken the initial impact that would explain damage to black boxes.
