Does it matter? Standby is STAND BY. If the seat is already purchased and reserved by another passenger, a two-year-old child, EVEN IF THEY NEGLECTED TO CHECK IN, the conflict must be resolved in the following manner:

"I'm sorry sir, we've made an error. There is no standby availability on this flight."

But why should they do that when they can sell two seats to three passengers, eh?

The entire industry needs a new, comprehensive set of laws protecting consumers. In the meantime, I still believe these actions are legally indefensible, regardless of the COCOC.

Comcast does it on a daily basis, doesn't apologize, and has one of the highest customer-satisfaction ratings in their sector. Welcome to the 21st century.

corporate players are nothing more than whores for wall street, which only has ONE thing in mind: $$$$$. so the answer is dead effin simple: overbook, knowingly bump, ditch pax for crew, knowingly exaggerate your broadband speed and you get hit with a truly enormous, outrageous fine that gets paid to the VICTIM not the government. seriously. try to remove a child from a paid for seat? $100,000 fine. no bullshit. no crying. no negotiating. i g-damn guarantee no airline would EVER do it again.

It always amuses me (to put it nicely) when a bank screws its customers out of $150 million and the regulators fine them $10 million for doing it. Then we wonder why it doesn't stop.

Not only that: in a market where all the players are crap, the least stinking crap is the best crap, hence the best but still crap.

So, ensuring that when you have a bad experience, you will have a much worse one if you complaint, and letting the news be known, is a way to "discipline" future passengers and avoid future "complaints". Like a military dictatorship ruling a country.

Yesterday's news:

1. A dude got in a full blown fist fight in the first class galley AND I don't think the captain zip tied him?!?!?

[Flight to China diverts, lands, sends dude to jail]

2. Some nut job twitter model with a dog went total byotch and refused to return her seat to the full upright position before takeoff.

[Filmed on smartphone. Much verbal abuse comes to her from more compliant passengers who recognize she is going to delay them by two hours. assenger, escorted off plane, and rebooked later (why she is not told to ride the bus strikes me as just as eye-rolling as them putting standby passengers in a kids seat (unless the forgot to check the kid in).]

Score two for the poor airline crews trying to provide a pleasant service experience but having to deal with assengers.
