  • Trip from 2001: Atlanta-Memphis and back(my 1st time flying)

This was my first time(and so far) only time flying... but hopefully that will change soon. This was the first time for everyone but my dad. We took this trip on January 2nd and 3rd, 2001(before 9/11). My mom was terrified about flying. We decided to go to Memphis because my mom wanted to see Graceland and we saw some other things to. The details are a bit sketchy since it has been over 3 years.

I can't remember the exact flight numbers, but I do know this:

    ATL-MEM

    Delta Airlines Boeing 727-200

We left the house(about 90 miles west of Atlanta) about 6:00am(Central time) that morning. We arrived at Hartsfield a little after 8:30am Eastern time. Got to the airport and checked in(we only had carry-on luggage since we were only going for about 36 hours). As best I can remember out plane was scheduled to leave at 10:50am. We had a pretty big delay because of the tugging equipment(that moves the plane). We ended up leaving about an hour late by my memory. The plane was 70% full. The seating was 3 seats on each side. I was by the window We took off and the flight was very smooth(there wasn't a cloud in the sky that day). It had snowed the day before but most of it was gone when we left. I have no idea what runway we took off on, but it was very smooth. The flight was a little over an hour long. We got peanuts and water or apple juice I believe. Other than that, just an uneventful flight as I watched the landscape go by. When we got into Northern Mississippi and were descending the snow was still on the ground. We came in and landed at Memphis airport(smooth landing again) and when we stopped at the terminal to unload, we didn't quite pull up far enough and the people who were standing up had to sit down so we could pull forward 2 inches. We eventually deplaned and Memphis Airport was a very dull boring complex. We began our trip.

    Delta Airlines

    MD-80

This was pretty much like the first flight, only it was night. We left a bit early(seems like we were supposed to leave around 8:30pm and got going a little early). Takeoff was quicker and steeper this time because it was nighttime. Again, very smooth flight for the most part with no clouds at all in the sky. This flight was only 40% full I think. There were empty seats everywhere. The seating was 3-2. I was by the window(again) and mostly just watched the landscape again. Service if I remember correctly was very similar to the first flight. Peanuts and something to drink. We came in and the landing was a little bumpy(probably because of the noise ordiances at night). This flight was about 50 minutes long by my memory and we arrived sometime just after 10:00pm Eastern time. We were sitting in front of the wing on both flights.

I don't have anything to compare it to, but it seemed like a good flight(no turblence), and I got from one place to another. I will probably fly Delta again(I don't know how their service has been affected by the cuts since 9/11).

Wow...if only I could remember that many details about my first flight!

Just asking, why did it take 3 and a half hours to get from Alabama to ATL? I am assuming you guys jus took I-20 and then caught I-285/I-85 down to Hartsfield from Alabama, so was there traffic? I thought 90 miles took around 1.5-2 hrs max...

Actually it was about an hour and a half. The Atlanta arrival time is in Eastern time while my departure time from my house is in Central time. Sorry about the confusion.

For a first trip, not bad in getting two different types as starters.
Good to start with the 727.
        Nice report

At the time, I was living near Anniston, about 60 miles East of Birmingham on I-20. Now I live about 100 miles southeast of Birmingham on the GA stateline just north of Auburn off I-85.

Just north of Auburn? Cool! I went to school there. Good part of the state for deer hunting.

Tell your mom that flying is the safest forum of transportation. Every time I meet sombody that is scared of flying it always helps.

Delta's service hasnt changed at all. I love their service, they have some really nice FA's, and they actually still serve food! That is an airline pet peve of mine. I hate it when they dont serve food on flights over two hours (accept I understand WN, JB, and other low cost carriers situations) but hey when I go on a four flight on american with just pretzels, there is something wrong with that. Sorry I went off on a tangent.
