To be honest, my experiences date back a little bit However I remember them for the fun of
-DC 10, LAX-SAN, my first ever Ten
-707-123B, SAN-LAX, another Seven-O-Seven tail in my tally
-A300-600, SDQ-MIA, just to see .... and for the fun of adding a first US registered Airbus
-ATR42, JFK-BOS, AAeagle by Flagship, a US registered ATR42 in the records and the same for
    -SH360, PHL-JFK.
As a matter of fact, the aircrafts were themselves tidy and nicely appointed, good color balance on seats etc.
I think giving AA a try over a transatlantic.

I've flown on one AA MD-80, that was pre-9/11. Service was great and the plane looked really nice and clean. Yep, there was plenty of leg room, no IFE- but I don't much care for the IFE on most flights anyway. I also loved the engine sound on take-off!!! The MD-80's engines sound awesome on take-off!!!!

AA is pretty nice. some of the MD-80s have superb leg room. flew on an ex-TWA MD DFW-ATL and was surprised at how much there was. the 757s are pretty nice, too.

Im pretty much repeating everythign everone says and id be a good person to ask about AA hence my screen name.. . so i am obviously biased, but what i say is still the honest truth.

I have had HORRIBLE service on AA and EXCELLENT service on AA. However the excellent serviced i recieved with AA FAR out weighed the bad service. the same time i was having a really hard time trying to get out of STL to fly to OKC, they were trying route me through every possible way through DFW, ORD, MIA etc etc...but nothing worked. till finally someone cancelled the 9:30pm seat STL-OKC. They immediatly jumped and got me in the seat. so they went out of there way to get me on the flight, calling everyone, etc etc. It was that flight that won me over and I now stay with AA, Iv flonw 2 more times wiht them and always got good service, and i am hoping to fly them STL-BWI on the wonderful MD80's...

American is a good airline. The extra legroom is great and crews are friendly. Enjoy your trip with American.

I recently flown American Airlines for the first time in May and I must say, I love their MD-80's. They're clean, and quiet (well, depends on where you sit). The More-Room Throught Coach American offers on the MD-80s is GREAT! The only thing is there's no IFE, which is no big deal to me. It really is a great airline. Hope you get a great crew to go along with their great service cuz that always helps.

p.s- You might not get fed if your flying coach, but if your like me, being on an airliner is more than enough.

I've flown with them about 15 times in the past few years, mostly RJs but occasionally a 757 or MD80.
I don't really know how quiet the MD80s are. The only time I was in one I was in the last row. So you can imagine how that was.
The 757s are good. Unfortunately I think they are removing/have removed the extra legroom, but they're still fine.
ERJ-135....small plane of course. But I don't mind them as much as some do.
The service on all of my flights has been great!

I've been on AA once. MD-80 and F-100. Both were nice, and the MD-80 was actually looking quite well. We left on time all 4 flights, and got there early all 4 flights. good food..good service...this is why they earn a spot as my 2nd favorite airline only to US Airways

Ive flown AA about 30+ times in the last couple of years Internationaly and Internaly. I would have to say out of the other US airlines ive flown AA seem to offer to offer the most well rounded quality service. The seat pitch is one of the best, seats are comfortable, food (if you get any, seems to be the same with all US carriers. sucks ass if you ask me) is good and fresh, and the crew, although alittle old (again seems to be a trait with US crews) are competent and usualy quite friendly. The 757/767 serice will be good, nice aircraft, good condition planes, overall you should enjoy. Md80's ok, unless your at the back, if so bring your noise cancelling headphones :P and the ERJ, although having no headroom at all is an ok little regional jet for short hops. If i were you i'd try and pick something up at the airprot before boarding as sometimes you wont get any food service just the rolled gold pretzels (my favourite ) and a soft drink. this can be a bit laborious on 2 hour flights. Overall your in for a good trip

ps - if you dont want your AAdvantage miles i'll have them

Let us all remember that ALL airlines have more than 90% of their employees qualifying as GREAT!! I have flown on all the majors, and people are people. Yes, there are bad apples in every bunch, but I'm glad to see that no one here ever classifies an entire group based on one bad experience (unlike other message board sites!) .

That being said, airlines offer different levels of service to their DOMESTIC coach passengers. American and Delta, for example, have their official magazine, and that's it, unless you're on a 777. America West offers some IFE, but have a charge for the headsets (although any standard walkman-type headphone will work). Northwest and Continental don't have any IFE (that I saw), but all offer snacks on certain flights, as well as the standard drink and peanut service. All are fine if you've got your book - in fact, if you didn't know the airline you were on, it could sometimes be hard to tell the difference.

United (my favorite, obviously) still offers IFE on most of its flights. I've been delayed terribly on United, but the flights always seem to be the most relaxing, as I have my choice to watch the movie/listen to the music OR read my book if I don't care for what's being shown.

Plainly put, you shouldn't have a bad experience IF you are an informed traveller who knows what he's doing and knows what to expect . Have a great flight, and let us know what your experience is!!

American Airlines are wonderful. I can't remember what aircraft I flew on (there were two - LAX to ORD, ORD to BRD), but after crossing the Pacific on Qantas and getting no sleep in cramped old cattle class, I didn't really care so long as the damn things had wings and a tail)...

Their ground crew and flight attendants were unfailingly helpful, and I'd recommend them over and above Continental and United to anyone.

well, actully, the longest flight is the 757 from sfo to jfk. the 767 is from fort worth? to SFO. the MD-80 is from PHL to Fort Worth. the ERJ is from BOS to PHL. I'm already flying Aer Lingus from JFK-Shannon and Shannon-BOS. I used to just fly the route SFO-JFK (united) and then JFK-Shannon and back (aer lingus) and then stay a few weeks with family in delaware before flying back to SFO from PHL (nonstop). but this time we used expedia. that's why it's all crazy. (we're stopping in delaware this time too.

    sorry if u didn't understand that. I didn't either :P

I know a lot of people don't like American's MD80 but I've been on 3 of them and I really like them. Just be up in the front though, it's a lot quieter. I find that they have a good amount of leg room also, but no IFE
