I experienced my longest delay ever a few days ago when I travel from London Heathrow to Hong Kong on a Virgin Atlantic A340-600.
On 25th July, when I was at Heathrow airport, the check in staff told us that the plane has delayed from 9:30pm to 11:00pm due to some technical problems.
Then, all went smoothly and we are waiting for the gate number. At Heathrow airport terminal 3, the last flight is 11:00pm. At about 10:50pm, nearly all shops have closed and all people sitting there was waiting for this flight. We still do not know the gate number. Suddenly, a person came out and some passengers sitting far away began to follow him. Without any announcement, everybody then got up and follow him. Firstly, we thought he was taking us to the gate.
After walking for some distance, we all knew we cannot board on the plane that night. The man had directed us to the immigration desks. We all then got the baggage again. We still did not know what has happened. After we went out, more than 300 passengers were waiting for the accomodation arrangement. ( still guessing as no one from virgin atlantic came out and told us what happened and what would be the arrangement.)
after waiting for half hour, we were then told that the flight has cancelled and we will be arranged to stay in a hotel for one night. After that, we have to wait for the coaches for a long time. It took us more than 2 hours for waiting and finally get to the hotel.
It was told that the next day flight will be 11:00am, but ends up 2:00pm..............

After we board the plane, the captain told as there is a problem with the nose gear navigation system, the engineer had to work overnight in order to fix the problem. Finally, we got back to HK safely.
