  • China Eastern LAX-Shanghai A346

About one week ago, I flew on China Eastern from LAX to Shanghai. The flight was the second flight of three between JFK and PEK. I had never been on China Eastern before and I had not heard the best things about the service. An AA agent, when I called to reserve a seat because the flight was an AA codeshare, told me that the airline did not have seat assignments. She proceeded to tell me how "different (in a bad way)" MU is.
I could not find a single thing to complain about. The A340-600 was absolutely beautiful. The seat pitch rivaled the AA MRTC that the AA 762 I had just connected from had. The Interior, just like all A346s, was light and open-feeling. During taxi and part of the decent, the tail camera was shown on the cabin LCD screens. Although there were no PTVs, each and every seat on the entire plane had a standard 110v electrical outlet. Being able to use my laptop was better than a PTV anyday. I do like looking at the map on PTVs, but they put it up on the public screens enough where I was still happy.
When we boarded, little cases were passed out that contained eye masks, toothbrushes, and tube socks. This was an amenity that I though only fancy European Airlines provided. Three delicious Chinese meals were served and all passengers were given more than one choice of food.
Although everything was great, beware of a couple of things: the F/As, in trying to keep the cabin dark, forced passengers to keep shades closed during almost the entire 14 hour cruise and we boarded from one of the LAX auxilary gates and had to ride a bus from the terminal. We were also diverted (not MU's fault) due to weather at PVG. We landed at SHA after circling for a long time. MU did a great job fixing my connection to PEK.
Before the flight, I was a little frustrated by the fact that very little info was avalible about MU's A346s and this particular flight (the China Eastern website, at least the english version, is terrible!). Please respond with your questions and/ comments.

Glad to see that you had a (generally) good experience. It's good to see the stereotype that "Chinese airlines are bad" broken.

If you are flying during a time that's "supposed" to be night time according to the departure city's time, the FAs will definitely try to darken the cabin. I've had the same experience on many different airlines.

The thing about MU's website...definitely true. I find that most mainland China airlines have websites that are either very badly organized, or lack a lot of information (in both Chinese and English). Oh well, at least they are improving in leaps and bounds. :P

      Re:

Hey man, good flt review. It was good to read nice things about a Chinese airline, these days looks like competition drives almost all major airlines to provide better service.

      Happy Flying!
