  • LIT-MEM-ATL-MCI-SLC (DL non-rev)

By the title I'm sure you're thinking what kind of trip is THAT? lol. It's a non-rev trip that my mom and I took several years back, probly 4 or 5, on DL. We received buddy passes from a friend who was a F/A for DL and were going to visit her and her family in SLC and then we were going to visit some of our family in SAN. Sorry I don't have any of the flight numbers or registrations. Much of this trip wasn't suppose to happen. The routing was supposed to be LIT-DFW-SLC-SAN-DFW-LIT, but it turned out to be much longer. And this report isn't about the individual flights as much as it is the experience.

Like I said before, much of the trip wasn't supposed to happen. When we arrived early in the morning for our trip to DFW, the check-in agent said the flight was over-booked and it didn't look like we were going to get on it (because we were flying standby). The agent then said that she could put us on the flight to MEM (when DL still operated LIT-MEM) and we could find a connection to SLC once there. I guess the gate agent felt sorry for us because we couldn't go to DFW so she let us sit in first class. It was nice....but I'm sorry the flight was so short.

Once in MEM, they also informed us that all of their flights to DFW and SLC were over booked. So they said "Why don't you go to Atlanta, we're sure you'll find a flight there".......right. Our DL friend in SLC said that she was tracking our flights through the DL system and said that when she saw that they had put us on a flight to ATL, she called the MEM airport and told someone to stop us and put us on a flight to CVG because it's a much easier hub to get out of. But that person she called didn't make it to us in time and before we knew it, we were off to ATL.......where we would stay for a while.

Once in Atlanta (about 10:00am),.....big surprise here.....all of their flights to SLC were booked for the rest of the day. We spent 10 hours trying to get out of ATL. Gate agents were trying to put us on any west-bound flight they could find....DEN, SAT, MCI, and ORD were all possibilities. All of those flights were pretty late in the day and we were basically guranteed a seat on any of them. The MCI flight was the earilest (which was at about 8:00pm) and so we wanted to take it. The agents informed us that there was no other MCI-SLC flight that night and so we would have to wait until early in the morning to leave MCI, but they said the MCI-SLC plane was only about half full and so we had a good chance of getting on it. So they sent us to MCI. We were put in the back of the plane (MD8 next to the engines and it was hard to sleep but we were just glad to be out of ATL.

    (Evening)

We arrived in MCI at about 10:30 or so. We didn't want to spend the night in the airport and so we found a hotel close to the airport and spent the night. We woke up at about 4:00 the next morning to catch our SLC flight. Once at the airport, the agents told us that there was a lot of room on the flight and let us sit in first class because of the ordeal we had been through. I remember that we were served a full breakfast for the flight.

We were so happy to finally arrive in SLC. Our friend told us that she had tried to stop us from going to ATL but couldn't get the message to us. We spent about a week in SLC and it was great.

I'll post the second half of the trip later.

Definitely not your typical trip report . Very interesting, especially the routing.
