  • Cactus 873 BOS-LAS & Cactus 437 LAS-YVR

Note: No pics until I return b/c I am using the free hotel computer and can't process.

    Flight: Cactus 873 BOS-LAS
    A/C: A319 N804AW
    Seat: 11A

Well it was time to go to YVR again, this time on America West. Got up at 3:30 am and left CT for BOS at 5:30am. It was raining very hard the whole way with very low visiblity. When we got about 30 miles away from BOS, the traffic started and went all the way into the city. So the drive took a lot longer than usual. We thought we would miss the flight for a while. But we got to the car parking place, and then quickly to America West checkin. Check in was slow, as there were these people ahead of ahead of us that had some sort of issue with their stuff, and the agent took a lot of time. Then some random guy sitting in first class, got to check in before us, even though he arrived later... that was kind of a WTF. But we checked in and our checkin went quickly and the agent didn't mess with the seat assignments.

We went to the boarding area which was small, and boarding started shortly after. I had seat 11A. The A319 was very nice and clean inside. We pushed back on time and then taxied to 15R for departure. Takeoff was fun as usual, and we went up and quickly into the mist then clouds. Was a terrible day for pictures though, until getting up above the clouds.

The FA's came around with the nuts and drinks, and the headset rentals for $5. But I brought my own headset. The movie (which I think was "Fever Pitch") didn't come on right away, but was preceded by this gag show and some sitcom, so I fell asleep for a while, and woke up a bit after it started. The movie was pretty good, IMO, and had a few funnies. It was about this guy who was a big Red Sox fan and what happened after he got a girlfriend.

So I watched the movie as we sped along toward Vegas. We flew over the midwest and ran into some light to moderate turbulance. Soon the landscape changed and became desert, which was pretty cool to look at. The movie ended and the trivia thing came on.

After a bit more flying it was time to start decent into Vegas. As we got lower we ran into some clear air turbulence and Vegas seemed to rise from the nothingness of the desert. We decended lower and lower and made a few turns and then were on final approach, getting bumped around a bit. But it was a nice ride. We touched down nicly and then turned off the runway, with a short taxi to the gate. We arrived early after about 5 hours of flying.

This was a very good flight, and I have no complaints about it.

    Flight: Cactus 437 LAS-YVR
    A/C: A319 N802AW
    Seat: 13F

Well after a bit of a wait in LAS, it was time to board the YVR flight. I felt kind of latharginc because of the Burger King I had eaten in the airport, then walked around the depressed concorse A and B. But once I got on the flight I started feeling better. The captain, came on and made a few jokes, which was good. We pushed back early and taxied to the runway. We started roll just as a Southwest 737 ahead of us was off the runway. Takeoff as usual was very fun. We flew over the strip and I took pics as we went by the Mandalay Bay hotel. Also we ran into a lot of clear air turbulence, until was got above it. Then it was a smooth cruise over the desert. Once Las Vegas, disappeards there is nothingness. But the landscape was very nice took look at, and instead of watching the movie (Ice Priness) I chose to stare out the window most of the time. I was my first time flying over the Southwest desert region, so I was very interesting.

As we flew on, I saw a big dry area which seemed like a lake bed. I wondered to myself if it was Area 51

Soon it became cloudier with some light to moderate chop, so since there wasn't as much to see outside, I put on my headphones and watched the end of the movie. The FA named charles was a nice guy and was interested in my photography, so I had a chat with him too.

We soon started decent into YVR with a bit of light turbulence coming through the clouds and got some nice views. We landed on 8L. And taxied to the terminal. Before leaving I went and gots pics in the cockpit and talked to the pilots. Then we left and went to customs.

This was another awesome flight and I had a very good time. Pics will come when I return home.

    Hope you enjoyed

Precisely one of the reasons I fly first class. I like being able to leave my house for LAS an hour before departure time, and still have plenty of time to make my flight thanks to the special checkin queues and security lines.

            And your a rich mf.

Nice report Paul, I think Area 51 is south of LAS though. Not sure. Flying over the southwest is always a treat as you look down on the desert and you can't help thinking "damn, thats a lot of nothing". Luckily next Tuesday I get to see it again.

              No I'm not.

Area 51 is actually northwest of Vegas. In fact, if you drew a line from LAS to YVR, it would be pretty much on it. That being said, there's no chance you were anywhere near it, due to the large area of restricted airspace around the facility.

Good report, but why would you leave from BOS and have to put up with all the hassle of getting there, traffic etc. Without a doubt my least favorite city to drive in after Montreal. Were the fares from BDL that much more?

It actually wasn't all too bad. Just a lot of volume. We didn't actually go through the city though. Just on I90 and through the Ted Williams Tunnel.
