  • Birthday trip to Vegas and Phoenix

Well, for my birthday this year my dad and I went to the airshow in Vegas at Nellis Air Force base. We also went to Phoenix to tour the Arizona State University campus in Tempe. It was a great trip. All the flights were full, including my first flights on WN.

    Flight #1:
    Alaska Airlines JNU-SEA
    Flight 60
    Stops:1
    Aircraft: 737-400

The day started at a lovely hour of 5am, we got up and jumped in the prearranged taxi. We got to the airport at 5:30AM and since we did web checkin we went upstairs and waited for security to open. At about 6 it opened and we went through. Our aircraft had stayed the night there. I hear some giggling and laughing down the terminal and here come the F/As. It was two females and a male. The two females were laughing, and the male said "You two are way too excited for this hour". Well we boarded and took our seat. We took off on time to KTN. It was dark when we left, and slightly cloudy. We were at cruise for an hour before the descending. During that time there was a snack and beverage service. The snack was Ghardetto type snack. I could eat so many of those. The flight attendants were cracking jokes the whole time.
Here is a pic of our arrival into Ketchikan:

After 45 minutes there, dropping off and picking up new passengers we shut the door and began the journey to Seattle. We took off to the south and headed straight for Seattle. Again, there was a beverage and snack service. This time the snack was a blueberry scone. There was alot of sugar in it, but it was excellent. It was still warm, and was the kind which broke apart very easily. During this hour and half or so cruise I looked out the window, when finally we began descent into SEA.
Here is a pic of our approach:

We touched down, and the flight attendant said something that had the entire back half of the plane laughing. After we deplaned, my dad and I went to get a snack out of the new terminal. The new area in Sea-Tac is awesome, and there is awesome food there.

We then hurried to our next gate, at the very end of the C concourse. We got there and found no aircraft. Dont worry, it showed up, slightly behind schedule though. But we managed to leave on time.

    Flight #2
    Alaska Airlines Flight 652
    Aircraft: Mad Dog

For todays flight we had the MD-80 series aircraft. The MD-80 has awesome performance, but they are not quite as comfy as the 737s. The cabin seems too narrow. Anyways we took off to the south and headed directly to Vegas. Right after takeoff the captain pointed out two landmarks. Mount Rainier, and Mount St. Helens. I managed to snap a pic:

The F/As came through with drinks and snack. Again we got those pretzels, must be my lucky day. As soon as they were done handing out pretzels and drinks, they came through five minutes later with another beverage service. That is a really nice feature. Anyways, I did some homework on this leg It is hard to do homework while getting thrown about by turbulence.
Here is a pic I took along the way:

We descended on into LAS, this was also my first time flying into Vegas. Here are a couple pics of planes we saw:

We touched down on time and soon we were wandering through the D gates. How to figure out how to get to the C gates where WN is. Little did we know LAS is made up of islands. Well, took the trains over to the main island where we got our WN boarding passes. We didnt realize that you have to go back through security to get to WN gates. That is the only thing I did not like about LAS airport. Well, after standing in line for 45 minutes we went through security and headed to the train to our gate. Here I learned that Las Vegas has awesome sunsets

Well, we had an hour to kill till our flight to PHX. So we called home, and went and ate dinner.

    Southwest Airlines
    Boeing 737-300
    LAS-PHX

After dinner we went and got in the B line. The flight showed up slightly late, so as soon as everybody was off, we started the boarding process. I now admire WNs efficiency. Well, we got on and as I was standing at the entrance waiting for the line to move, the pilot noticed my AS shirt and said "You are wearing the wrong shirt". I then explained that this was my first time with WN and if I liked it, I would by a WN shirt. Well, we got everybody seated and we pushed back on time. The pilots made no warning of the extreme turbulence we were gonna get. They eventually said it was a rough night everywhere on the West Coast. Well, after take off the FAs came through with the peanuts, until they decided it no longer safe to stand After things calmed down abit, they finished delivering peanuts, and took our drink orders. After everything was done we were already for landing in PHX. We touched down and went to the gate. We then went and called our hotel van, and we went to our hotel after 12 or so hours of flying.

Part two is coming. Too sleepy to continue

    Part two.

After a lovely tour of the ASU campus we got a ride to the airport. We actaully shared a van with two other flight crews, a F9 and US crew. We got dropped off at the Southwest curb and went in. We already had our tickets from the previous day, so we headed to security. After a nice fast pass through of security, we went to find our gate, even though we had two or so hours till departure. While we were there, there was some live country singer that was paid by WN to play there. After a while I got hungry, so we attempted to get food. This involved a trip on the 'walk of death', AKA a horizontal escalator. After surviving that crazy trip we got some food. PHX has some awesome stores there. Well, we wandered back to the gate and waited for the plane. After enough sitting, our plane arrived.

    Southwest Airlines
    737-300
    PHX-LAS

Once everybody was deplaned, boarding began. I really like WNs A,B,C boarding system. Well, this time we were in the A group. We boarded and took our seats in one of the first rows.
A view while on the ramp:

After everybody was on, we pushed back and began taxi. I think we set land speed records with that taxi, we were released from the tug and only a couple minutes later it seemed, we were screaming down the runway. Right after departure I noticed the ASU campus. The airplanes departing during the tour were very distracting.
    ASU from the air:

    Capitol Cargo:

Well, a few minutes after rotation, the FAs came through and dropped off peanuts and took our drink orders. I had another Dr. Pepper. After flying on WN, AS seems to have a very small drink list. Anyways, the pilot calculated enroute time to be 37 mins, must have had some serious tailwinds. Not long after drinks were served, we began our descent back into Vegas. The FAs came through and cleaned up the cabin, and before we knew it, we were on the ground.
Here is a photo from cruise:

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed WN. They were fast, fun, and efficient, they way any airline should be. If needed, I will happily fly WN again, although AS gets first preference.

After a lovely few days in Vegas enjoying the sun, and extremely loud aircraft, it was time to head home. We got up at 6AM to return the car to the rental car lot, and take the courtesy bus to the airport. We were all checked in and through security by 7:30. Our flight didnt leave until 9AM, so I did some Physics homework while waiting. Finally after waiting our plane arrived, and much to my surprise, it was an aircraft swap. They swapped the -400 for the -900 .

    Flight #5
    Alaska Airlines
    Flight 663
    LAS-SEA

After all 150 people, I think that was the number of people I counted, deplaned, it was boarding time After a smooth boarding we sat down in our seats. I was hoping for leather, although my wish would be fulfilled, these seats were cloth. I had heard from other people that the -900 seems extremely long inside. I found it quite comparable to the -400. After we pushed, we taxied out to the active and took off to the west, I think, and were soon heading northward. This flight was just a snack flight also. Mmmm....I love the party mix the hand out The rest of the flight went smoothly, as I struggled through physics the entire flight, while also trying to keep the book on the table, yes there was alot of turbulence today. We began our descent, which was the longest let down I have ever experienced. The clouds just didnt seem to get closer as we descended. But finally we were on the ground, we did land on Runway 16R, not the taxiway. We deplaned and headed straight for the new terminal to get something to eat.

Our four hour layover in Seattle all occured in the new terminal. I ate some fish and chips from Ivars, very disgusting. Then I ate a burrito from QDobas(sp?). It was the biggest burrito I have ever eaten. It must have had a four inch diameter and six inches long, it was awesome. Seattle has some great food in their airport. While I was reading my book, and my dad went exploring, I noticed the windows were getting sprayed. All of the sudden all the fire trucks showed up. It sounds like some how the sprinklers got tripped. I was wondering why they would wash the windows on a rainy day. Finally we headed down to our gate for our flight back to Juneau.

    Flight #6
    Alaska Airlines
    Flight 67
    Stops:2
    737-400

The aircraft arrived to us alittle late, so they were rushed to get people on board, so we hurried on and got in our seats. This is where I got my wish, the seats were leather. These seats were the most comfortable, and well designed seats I have ever experienced on an airplane. Right as they were about to close the door somebody behind us said "Watch your language" to somebody behind him. He then jumped up and raced to the front of the plane to tell the FAs. They kicked him and his family off the airplane. He reeked of alcohol some body said. I felt sorry for the kids. They seemed very confused. But the FAs did a great job of dealing with it. During the safety briefing, the FAs showed how to use a life preserver, whish was a first for me. Soon we were off. We took off from runway 16L. Headed northward to Ketchikan. During this snack service we got a cookie and some TGI Fridays chips. Both very good. I did some more homework on this leg, until my laptop battery died. I then sat back, relaxed, and enjoyed the views. Soon we were on our approach to Ketchikan. We touched down, taxied to the terminal. Here we let off some people, and picked up a few more. We were then underway to Sitka. During this segment, we only got Orange Juice, since it was a short flight. It turns out that the OJ was frozen. I was finally able to drink after we left Sitka. It was one of those nights that makes me want to be a pilot. It was clear, a rarity for SE, and the moon was out bright. The moon was lighting up all the mountains that were sticking up through the clouds. It was beautiful. We were then on approach to Sitka. Sitka has a very fun approach. You are over water till the runway. We touched down, we dropped off a few people, picked up some more. We also did a crew change, kind of an odd place to do a crew change. Anyways, we were off again, this time to Juneau. This flight is so short, the FAs dont even get out of their seats. We touch down in Juneau on time, where it was 25 degrees, and clear. We took a cab to my dads apartment place and went to sleep, after I did more physics of course. We then woke up a 6AM to go get on the ferry to home.

I hope you enjoyed the report. Very long I know. It was an awesome way to spend a birthday. I sure hope I get into ASU. Feel free to post comments. If you want, I may be able to post some pics from the airshow.

Hahaha! That couldn't be more true considering which one is in the picture...thats the oldest one in the fleet! It even has an unpainted "badge of honor" under the nose from a battle with a tug! Definately the plane with the most "character".
