  • Valujet anyone?

Has anyone on here ever had a flight on Valujet (before it was airTran)? I remember a family member flying on them quite a bit back in the 90's. What was the service like? Was it a good airline? Also, does anyone remember if they operated any 722's or just Dc-9's?

They operated DC-9-20 and 30 series and had several MD-80s in their fleet at the time of the Valujet 592 crash (The oxygen generators that caused the fire were from MD-80s Sabretech was prepping for Valujet).

They were similar to Southwest in terms of service. All coach seating, no assigned seating, F/As wearing polo shirts, games inflight, bag of snacks and drinks, and no IFE.

Was it a good airline? That's questionable. They had a number of incidents prior to 592 that were well publicized (Engine fire @ ATL that destroyed an a/c, flights that landed very low on fuel, flights that had to divert due to low fuel, a number of aborted landings/takeoffs just to name a few issues they had.). Delays and cancellations due to maintenance issues, as well as extremely overbooked flights were commonplace (The delay and cancellation issues plagued the airline for a number of years after the merger with AirTran. This was mainly due to the age of the fleet.). They were good as in they brought low fares to a number cities in the Eastern US, kept DL on their toes, and vanquished several other LCCs that were based out of ATL that started up around the same time as Valujet (Private Jet, Kiwi Int'l [moved their hub to EWR], and Air South [had a hub @ CAE and one @ ATL.]).

Thanks for your reply. I just noticed that this should be in the Flight Reviews section. Sorry everybody!
