  • MyTravel Enthusiasts Open Day

Finally, a UK airline has opened its doors to the public and let people see the behind the scenes running of a major UK charter airline. Mytravel should be applauded for doing this in today's security conscious climate and it was a fantasitcally enjoyable day.

The day for us started at MYT's training centre in Cheadle, where we were given presentations on all aspects of cabin safety including fire fighting and cabin evacuation. Some of the attendees were able to put a fire out using the fire sim and also we were put in the cabin sim which was filled with "smoke" and we were put through a simulated evacuation. We then watched a slide demonstration.

Following further presentations on the role of the training centre we had a lunch before being bussed to Terminal 1 at Manchester where we boarded G-SMTJ, a MYT A321, for an hours pleasure flight.
This was a superb flight on a very clear day with running commentary from the flightdeck - an enthusiast's dream.
We departed MAN on 24R and headed to Liverpool where we conducted a missed approach, which was simply amazing to witness, before heading back to Manchester. I took a few video clips of the departure, missed approach and landing.

After landing I managed to grab a quick flight deck photo before we were bussed to the MYT hangar for an operations and flight planning presentation, which showed the system that MYT use for planning and operations - very interesting stuff!

Finally we went into the hangar itself where we had an engineering presentation before being given 5 mins to wonder around the hangar.

Congratulations to MYT for a very enjoyable day. The crew and cabin crew who were there through the day were very professional and approachable - thankyou all for your time!

G-SMTJ was a refreshingly clean and smart aircraft, a far cry from some of the charter airlines i've travelled on in the past.

I can only recommmend this enthusiasts day for anyone who wants to see behind the scenes of an airline...there should be a few more sessions in the future.

Sounds great! If they can do that in the U.K. given the recent events, theres no reason why an airline out here couldn't do it!

      Did it cost any money?

Doesn't sound like a bad price for the experiance. I wish something like that would come out here to the states.

Nice footage James! That's not a bad little camera

I'm still baffled as to why someone felt the need to randomly shoot in 'continuous' mode on approach into Manchester

Seeing as it was slow it brings back memories of the 300D

You where very lucky to have been able to see behind the screens of an airline, more airlines should do that.

2 Years ago SN Brussels did something similar for free, it wasn't as extended as your experience but still nice to do

Sadly it wasn't even a DSLR...it was some kid on their Samsung D900 camera phone!

                      Interesting report.

Nice for an airline to do something like that and give people an idea what goes on behind the scenes.

Interesting. Good to see everything went on smoothly. Let's hope this won't be the last of its kind.

Great flight review, must have been quite enjoyable. Just wondering though, the missed approah video didn't load, I was able to watch the other two.

Same here Foxtrot, the videos from MAn worked fine, but the missed approach one refused to load.
