  • ADL-MEL-ADL Daytrip With Tiger + Pics

New domestic startup, Tiger Airways Australia had some special fares at A$19 one way. Dad and I booked flights between Adelaide to Melbourne and return for A$80. However, it is those little things that add up as to get the seat you want it is an extra A$5 per sector to book the seat. That added A$20 onto the total, but still not bad, but that is how LCCs make money through charging for things like that.
Tiger Airways have been attracting some bad publicity since they started in November 2007. So I am expecting something to go wrong. At least Melbourne is not that hard to get home from if things do go pear shaped.

Check in was easy in Adelaide as there was not a big queue.

A couple of aircraft I saw before our plane came.

Onboard there were a few spare seats left so dad moved behind me so we both had a window seat.

Flight was uneventful with a little turbulence here and there. The usual food was offered for sale, but I thought no point buying anything on a 1 hour flight.

I was surprised when we landed in MEL that the aircraft used the full 2286m length of runway 27.

Walk from plane to the new terminal 4 that Tiger uses was long. When I went to take a photo of the plane I had just flown on a member of the ground crew went nuts at me saying I had violated some security rule. If they donít want people taking photos of the plane, donít make them walk miles across the bloody tarmac!. After that little episode I was not happy, as you can see what is going on the tarmac from the terminal anyway.

Walked from terminal 4 to the main terminal. A long walk it was. Then got set up by a window in the Virgin Blue terminal for the afternoon.

Here are some pics of some of the international airlines I saw.

Spent an afternoon spotting in the main terminal and then headed back to the new terminal 4 at MEL where Tiger operates from. Boy is that a long walk from the main terminal to there.

Flight back was delayed by about two hours as a thunderstorm during the afternoon brought everything to a standstill at the airport.
Again check in was not a problem. This time there was a bit more of a queue. It was then I found out about the delay.
If was nearly dark when we eventually left MEL. Again flight was uneventful.

When getting off the plane had a quick look at the flight deck and the pilot was apologetic about being late, but there is nothing you can do about weather.

    CONCLUSION
Why Tiger had to have their own terminal I donít know. It is a bit of a hassle to get from the plane and then to the Tiger terminal and then to the main one. So be prepared to do a lot of walking.
The actual flights were ok, but their terminal setup was a bit primitive I thought.
Next time I would rather pay a bit more and fly either Qantas or Virgin Blue and get into the main terminal.
