  • Trip Report: Moscow - Kiev - Barcelona and back with UIA (B738, B733, B734)

    Airline: Ukraine International Airlines
    Flight: 574
    Aircraft: Boeing 737-8HX
    Registration: UR-PSC
    Departure Airport: Moscow-Domodedovo (DME), Russia
Arrival Airport : Kiev Boryspil International (KBP), Ukraine
    Seat : 20A (Economy)
    Date: 16 October 2012

This fall I had to go to Barcelona and I choose UIA because of the low price and relatively democratic layover in comparison with other cheap offers. UIA operates from Domodedovo airport and the trip began right there. Flight PS 574 was supposed to be operated by Boeing 737-500. Check-in started on time and it was quick and well-organized. After we had been through security it was announced that our flight was delayed. I connected to the web using Domodedovo free Wi-Fi and found out that due to some reasons aircraft operating to Kiev had been changed and instead of an old B735 we got brand new B738. The aircraft arrived from Kiev almost at the time of the scheduled departure from Moscow. Anyway after a 40 minutes delay finally boarded and soon departed.

The cabin crew apologized for the delay. Can't say I was very much disappointed with that, firstly because I had a 7hs layover ahead, secondly it was a pleasure to fly the new Boeing. The aircraft itself was clean and comfortable. I'd like to note good leather seats and plenty of legroom. The sandwiches and drinks they offered on board were ok for such a short hop. We arrived in Borispil 30 minutes late.

Arrival Airport: Barcelona El Prat (BCN), Spain

In Kiev I had to wait for the next flight. I liked the company's new Terminal F which is convenient and not crowded at all.

I switched my flight to an old but good-looking 737-300 which also had adequate legroom and was a delight to fly with. This flight departed and arrived on time. The cabin crew on both flights were very helpful and friendly.

Catering was ok with a big choice of drinks. As for the disadvantages, it's perhaps the lack of any in-flight entertainment, except for magazines.

The return trip was even better than the outbound flights. Despite the fact the plane was an old one it didn't look worn and was quite comfortable. There were the same nice seats with plenty of legroom. But this time the catering was perfect. I guess they loaded that in Barcelona so it was way better than the meals we got previously. Besides drinks there was a piece of meat, a salad, cookies and a croissant. The flight attendants were attentive and efficient again. You could even ask them for 2 cups of tea or
coffee with additional bags of sugar and a juice and they were happy to give that to you. I also liked that they offered nice goods at the lowest prices right on board - SkyShop. I would say it was even cheaper than in Duty Free shops in Kiev and Moscow.

The last flight was short and smooth. I had some time to read the inflight periodical Panorama magazine, which I took with me from the airplane to enlarge my collection of inflight magazines.

When we arrived at DME the morning was foggy. We got the baggage successfully and the journey was over. Overall experience with Ukraine Intl. Airlines was very positive. Surely, their fares are not the cheapest, but the trip can be good value for money if you book long in advance. I can recommend this airline.

Nice review and photos, don't get these too often from that part of the world. I've seen Ukraine Int'l aircraft during my transits at European airports, seems like a good airline.
