  • TFN-MAD-TFN on IB B 747-300 and A 340-600

During the last summer I had to do a practical training in Spain, so I decided to go to Tenerife and worked there in the Hotel Atalaya. At first I want to thank all the people from the hotel who made my time there the best time I could have. And now I want to come to my trip report. Everything started with the fact that I only wanted to know when the 747 of Iberia flies into TFN. While checking their website I noticed the ?planespotters dreaming offer?. They offered the flight from TFN to MAD for only 105,- Euros including taxes and fees. But the best things were the airplanes. TFN-MAD a 747 and MAD-TFN the new A 340-600!!! Within seconds I thought ?Let?s go to Madrid!!!?. But I faced some problems because (at this time) I didn?t own a credit card. After having contacted a few travel agencies and the Iberia counter at TFN I never thought I could fly on these two planes. Thankfully a friend of mine, Thanks Sebastian, helped me and I booked the flight (TFN-MAD 23rd of September/MAD-TFN 24th of September) on the web. The Tickets I got one hour later at the Iberia counter at TFN and only had to pay 97,- Euros because I chose the e-ticket.
The day my flight to MAD was scheduled I went to the airport at around six o?clock in the morning and was very excited because this should be my first flight on a 747 ever. I checked in and requested a window seat. The guy at check-in was very friendly and asked me if I want to check in for the flight back too. So I did and was given Seat 43L and 36A.
The airport and the new terminal are very nice. In the gate area are big windows were you can watch the traffic outside. And I liked the music which was played. It was a kind of relaxation music and made me very relaxed, I was very very excited to fly on the 747!!!
The plane arrived on schedule; it was the 747-300 TF-ATJ ?Jose Zorilla?. We boarded the plane directly from the terminal and I was very lucky to see that my seat was directly behind door 4R. For me, a guy with 1,87m, it?s more then legroom. But is it normal that I was freezing my feet the whole flight because of the air who was coming from outside?
The aircraft interior looked a bit used and some things were damaged. Unfortunately were the windows very scratched and the pics I took weren?t that good I expected them. But I?ll try to upload them later.
After the push-back the safety instructions for a B 747-200B were shown on the screens. Is this normal in the B 747-300? I was seated face to face to a F/A and when were taking off she told me that I?m not allowed to use my camera. After three minutes, and a few missed photo opportunities, she asked if I?am using a film camera or a normal one. So I told her that I only take photos and that was no problem for her. All in all I wasn?t very satisfied with the F/A?s of Iberia, they were very old, mostly rude and seemed to be bored during their job. The flight itself was very nice and we got a small meal (pasta with chicken). That was very surprising for me because everyone told me that on domestic routes there is no meal service. The flight was a bit bumpy but it was a kind of bumpy that makes fun. After nearly 2,5 hours we landed smoothly at MAD and taxied to our parking position. From there we were brought by bus to the terminal and I made my way to the city centre of Madrid. Which isn?t a big problem with the new metro. After a few nice hours in Madrid I went back to the airport and wanted to sit down in a restaurant to spend my night there. But at night only one cafeteria was opened and there it was very very cold.
For an airport of that size I expected more than one small restaurant at night. Anyway, in the morning I went to the gate a half hour before boarding time. After having waited there for 40 minutes we were told that the flight is delayed 30mins due to technical problems. After another 30 minutes we were told again that the flight is delayed and we shall wait at the gate area. Another 30 minutes later a lady of Iberia announced that we can go to the cafeteria and have there a breakfast. But none knows which cafeteria and where. So around 300 people were searching the cafeteria, which looked very funny. After we found the restaurant and the first ones got there their meals, the boarding of our flight was announced. All these announcements were made in Spanish and very bad English. I think for non-Spanish speaking people this could be a very big problem.
To the airplane we were brought by bus. It was the brand new A 340-600 EC-IOB ?Pablo Picasso?. I was impressed how long these A 340-600s really are. But the shock came when I entered my seat. It was window seat (36A) but there was no window. That?s that the second time this happens to me. Anyway the flight was very enjoyable and I very much liked the tail camera which was switched on the whole flight. The flight itself was very smooth and the aircraft was in a good condition (no wonder, it was only 14 days in service). Seats were very comfortable but in a new long-haul aircraft I expect PTV?s. For meal we had a cold breakfast which was like every time too small for me. The most time of the flight I was sleeping cause of the 3 hours sleep I only had during the last 30 hours. Two and a half hour after take-off we landed smoothly at TFN. To the terminal we were brought by bus and my journey ended.

The two flights were very nice, but the Iberia staff could be a bit nicer to their customers. For me it was an unforgettable to fly on the Boeing 747 and on the largest aircraft in the world. Thank you Iberia to make a dream come true for only 97,- Euros.

Congrats Georg! What a good trip report. I'm glad you enjoyed your journey. Regarding the Iberia FAs...they're famous for beeing like that, so they will not change (as of now).
