  • TFS to DRS on Air Berlin 737-800

After my practical training at Tenerife I had to go home. So I made my way to the airport to take the flight I booked 4 months ago - AB 7327 Tenerife Sur TFS to Dresden DRS. At this point I have to tell you that I?ve flown on Air Berlin three times before and wasn?t very satisfied with them. But for me it was the best and cheapest option to go home from Tenerife. I arrived at the airport two hours before the flight was scheduled. And the Info monitors were showing the correct time. This made me very happy, because after a tearful Good Bye to my lovely colleagues I only want to go home.
In front of the check-in desks were a huge crowd of Germans. I?m myself are German too but at this point I was really going to hate them. They are unfriendly with only a small sense of humour and like the Spanish people say ?Square heads?. Sorry Germans, but if you?ve lived ten weeks in a country like Spain you will know what I mean.
But let?s go on to the flight. The staff at the desk was very friendly and I think they spoke german very well. But I didn?t really tried this out because I?ve been there to learn Spanish. I had to pay 45 Euros for my excess luggage. But they first tried out to find a way I hadn?t to pay. But 50kg were too much for them. After I got my boarding card I noticed that the flight was delayed 20 minutes. OK. I went on to the gate area to have a look to the airplanes. Unfortunately are the windows at TFS very dirty and so it made no sense to take pictures. But this area is very nice. You have many shops and restaurants. So I decided to go shopping and bought a kilo of the typical Canary ?Gofio?. Does someone know some good recipes?
Anyway, I saw many interesting aircrafts and meet some people from the hotel I worked in the last weeks. But after I looked on the monitor with the flight information I noticed that my flight was delayed for 30 minutes and on the next monitor 40 minutes. After a very boring time at the airport our plane (Boeing 737-800 D-ABAZ) arrived with a delay of over 1 hour and 40 minutes. So we boarded the aircraft at dusk which meant that I couldn?t manage some wing views. Therefore I had booked a window seat directly over the wing for 6 Euros more. But I was very lucky that only one seat in the plane was empty was the seat next to me. So, I thought, it should become a pleasant flight. The captain told us that the delay was due to a fuel stop they had to make at FAO because of the short runway at Dortmund were the aircraft was coming from.
After departure we hit some light turbulences and I was thinking about the lovely island of Tenerife. For meal we had to choose between beef and pasta. I chose the beef. It was very tasty but such small that I finished my menu when the F/A was serving the meal two rows in front of me. In the board magazine I read that they?ll show us ?How too loose a guy in ten days?. I was happy to see that movie because I hadn?t seen it before. At our cruising altitude we were facing heavy turbulences and the pilot switched on the ?fasten seatbelts? signs. And after two hours in-flight, right over Madrid, I couldn?t hold on and decided to go to the toilet. In the back-section of the aircraft the F/A told me that I wasn?t allowed to stand up but I told him that I have to go to the toilet or a disaster will happen. While I walked back to my seat another F/A announced over the cabin-phone that we weren?t allowed to use the lavatories and the whole aircraft was staring at me because I was the only person standing upright. I thought OK it is dangerous when we are flying in some clear air turbulences, but five minutes later they started the to sell duty-free products. Which only lasted another five minutes because the captain told the F/A?s to sit down because of the more and more heavier turbulences. The aircraft was shaking from the left to the right and from up to down. The wings were shaking too and the people started to cry and puke. I?ve never been in an aircraft facing such heavy turbulences and was a little bit angry. Another point I haven?t been very satisfied with ? it was damn cold in the aircraft. And at the walls under the windows was a thin layer of ice! Is this normal???
The movie I was looking forward to watch wasn?t started by now and this after being in-flight for more then three hours. It was started around one hour before touch-down at DRS, which is more than stupid for a 1,5 hour movie?
After five hours in-flight, and 4,5 hours of heavy turbulences, we landed not smoothly but OK at DRS. A normal landing for Air Berlin. The typical ?OUUGH? went thru the plane when the captain told us the outside temperature. I this necessarily on every charter flight from a warmer country???
All in all it was the worst flight experience I ever had. This was mostly due to the turbulences but Air Berlin was responsible therefore too. The meal was too small, the staff was unfriendly and stupid and the in-flight entertainment started around 2 hours too late to enjoy the entire movie. Maybe someone will tell me the end of ?How to loose a guy in ten days??
Hope you enjoyed this report too. I know my sentences are a bit confusing but I?m actually not in the mood to think clear. It?s because of

Another great Georg trip report. I found very interesting all you said about Air Berlin, since a friend of my mom, who lives in Hamburg, told me they're the best- and he's a very frequent flier! (he flies almost every week between Hamburg and Zurich). Although you can't blame Air Berlin for the turbulence- that's not their real fault! So, Germanwings is still the best low-cost "made in Germany"?

    Cheers

      Isn't it?
Haven't flown on HLX and Air Berlin LCC (only charter), but like 4U most because it's the only LCC I can fly from DRS

Nice trip report.......and eeeeeehm about the tubulence......i think an airline is responsible for that......they should fly around the turbulence.......no matter how long the flight will take extra.,............I think even a extra fuel stop in possible then

Thanks for your reply uy707. Makes me happy to see how others were thinking 'bout their countrypeople. In german I would say:"Das geht runter wie ?l!!!". In english I only can say that this is that what I wanted to read/hear.
              Bye, Georg.
