  • America West JFK-LAS Flt 55

    Greetings:

Well I'm back from my couple of days in Vegas; hope you didn't miss me from the forums. I was originally going to Arizona but figured I would have more fun in Vegas, which like always I did. I'm going to break my trip report down into two posts since I want to make it as detailed as possible. First I'll start with the outbound flight to LAS

    Summary

    America West flight 55
    JFK-LAS
Depart 7:45 AM Arrive 10:28 AM (actual departure 7:40- actual arrival 12:00)
    Eq. Boeing 757 reg# N909AW
Coach Class- seat 10A exit row, full recline
    Overall satisfaction- Very Good.

I arrived at JFK's long-term parking lot at 5:00 Am and parked near the P4 bus station. Before 6:00 AM the buses only run every 30 minutes so I tried to time my arrival for the top or bottom of the hour. I was lucky and found a spot near the bus station and waited about 10 minutes in the cold dark morning with two other people for Bus B to take me to terminal 7. Surprisingly the bus was full by the time it made all the rounds at the parking lot. Bus B stops at terminal 4, 6, and 7, most people got off at terminal 6 which is the Jet Blue terminal. America West operates out of terminal 7 which is occupied mostly by British Airways, United and Cathy Pacific also share the terminal but all indications is that British Airways runs the terminal.

After arriving at the terminal I proceeded upstairs to check in where for second I couldn't find America West's ticket counter because all the backboard signs say British Airways. Once I made it to America West's ticket counter there was about 30 people on line. As I approached the line a TSA agent asked me to step aside so he could check my bags. I proceeded with him to the table where he started his inspection. The TSA was very friendly and professional. The inspection only took about two minutes and he then escorted me directly to the check in counter bypassing the line of now 50 people. I guess that's one benefit of a random security check you don't have to wait in line. The America West rep at the desk was very respectful and sat me in seat 10A as I requested. As I made my way to gate 6 through the security checkpoint I set off the alarm like I always do at JFK, anytime I leave from another airport I don't set off the alarm but at JFK I always do, even before 9/11. After the normal poking and prodding I continued my way to gate 6.

The time now was 6:00Am when I made it to my gate, which at the time the TSA was having its morning meeting with the manager. She wasn't very happy with the level of professionalism that she saw over he past few days. Her biggest complaints were agents eating at the checkpoints and leaning up against eq. I then walked around the entire gate area or terminal 7, which isn't all that big but is one of the nicest terminals at JFK. From the looks of it British Airways must have remodeled it very recently. Some highlights included large Plasma TV’s all over the place, the most comfortable waiting area chairs I've every seen, a decent food court, and about retail stores. During the time I was there, there were two UAL 767's one going to LAX and one just arriving from SFO, a UAL 777 heading to SFO and then to Asia, a British Airways 744 which had not activity around it, and two America West aircraft, a A320 going to Phoenix and my 757 going to LAS.

Allot of tired people got off this redeye flight from San Francisco. UAL only fly’s to SFO, LAX, and IAD out of JFK.. . Boeing 767-200. JetPhotos.com is the biggest database of aviation photographs with over 5 million screened photos online!

During my wait I spotted a South African 744, a VARIG MD-11, Jet Blue A320's, AA 767's, EL Al 777, and a DHL DC-8 (very loud takeoff). Lastly the food from the New York Deli in the food court wasn’t that bad but a bit overpriced. I had eggs, bacon, ham, and an OJ for $10.00.

Just landed from South Africa and is taxing to terminal 4.. . Boeing 747-444. JetPhotos.com is the biggest database of aviation photographs with over 5 million screened photos online!

The flight out to LAS was operated by a 757 in standard livery reg# N909AW with only 80 people on board. Being that there were only 80 people most single travelers had their own row and the service was very attentive. We began boarding at 7:10 and pushed back at 7:40 and left the ground at 7:56. During the flight we were served plenty of drinks, peanuts, pretzels, and a Power bar. Even with only 80 people the bathroom lines were always present. I’m guessing it was because every two minutes they would refill you coffee, OJ, or soda glass.

My seat was comfortable for a coach seat but since I was sitting on an exit row the armrest didn't go up but really didn't matter for me, I fit comfortably given the reduced seat width. The legroom was awesome being that there was no seat in front of me except for the FA's jump seat. During the flight they showed James Bond Die Another Day a half hour of music videos and since we hit a 160mph head wind and were going to be delayed they showed us another movie White Oleander. I watched Die Another Day but not White Oleander. Music selection consisted of 9 channels of music, and the FA's were very friendly and personable. Total flight time due to the headwind was 6 hours 8 minutes. It was a long flight. If the flight was full I probably would have been a bit uncomfortable.

Arriving in Las Vegas we parked at gate B12. I asked one of the FA's if I could visit the cockpit, which they let me after everybody got off and since the plane had a long layover in LAS I was able to spend a decent amount of time chatting with the Pilot and F.O. Overall I was very happy with America West. The flight was long but comfortable and the hospitality of the FA's made it an enjoyable flight.

Thanks to the flight crew of America West Flight 55 for the cockpit visit and their great in-flight hospitality.. N909AW. Boeing 757-2G7. JetPhotos.com is the biggest database of aviation photographs with over 5 million screened photos online!
