So sad to hear this. I was stationed at RAF Kinloss when the Nimrod went in at Toronto and the effect then was devastating.

My heart goes out to all the families of the guys who died.

Isn't the Nimrod a maritime recon a/c? What was it doing in land-locked Afganistan?

Long range and numerous staffed patrols from Kabul which could not be undertaken with Tornadoes. On a similar way, the French airforce happens to deploy Breguet Atlantcs to N'Djamena and Bangui, capitals of also landlocked Chad and CAR. They were some plan to deploy a couple to Bishkek, but the fleet size did not allow this.

Apparently needed as a communications relay platform because the hilly terrain limits the communications range of troops down on the ground. I imagine its reconnaissance capabilities also come in handy overland.
