  • Aboard a B-17.

Yesterday I found out there was a B-17 at Clark County Airport (KJVY) not far from Louisville so my Dad and I drove out to see it. For 10 bucks both of us could take a tour of the plane. It basically envolved just going in, walking through, and coming back out, but it was worth it. Here's a few pictures that I decided to post here because the motives and angles are a little too different for jp.

Nose and engine. Notice the zippers.

    Rear gun.

    Bombs. Fake of course.

    Plaque thing on the nose.

Little placard between the horizontal stablizer and the elevator (which is fabric covered btw.). I wonder if this has been on the plane since it was built?

So today I was flying to do touch and goes at JVY from LOU. As I was approaching to cross over the field I saw the B-17 waiting to take the runway. They waited for a few planes, me included. I landed and taxied off. I heard them make the radio call (you could hear the engines in the background , and the pilot thanked everybody at JVY for their hospitality. I cracked open the window on the 172 to hear what the beast sounded like on takeoff. The sight and sound of that thing taking off can't be easily forgotten.

BTW I should have a cockpit shot in the database here pretty soon.
    Hope you liked em.

Ah yes, the B-17 is near and dear to my heart. I paid to tour this one as well, about this time last year. Did you notice the "urinal"? It's a funnel, attached to a hose, which feeds to the edge of the airframe and empties on whoever or whatever happens to be below.

The "Liberty Belle" was here early in August. She was a beauty.
