SAN DIEGO - A military jet crashed at the Miramar Marine base Thursday, officials said. According to a spokesperson for the Marine Corps, an F/A-18 crashed about 12:30 p.m. near the base. The pilot ejected safely, apparently landing in the water, and was able to call for help on his own cell phone.
The plane went down on the eastern part of the base in what was formerly Camp Elliot, a San Diego fire department spokesman said. It started a grass fire that burned several acres. Helicopter video showed that several fire crews were fighting the fire from the ground and helicopters were dropping water on the area.
