PICTURE: First RAF TriStar arrives for avionics upgrade
    By Craig Hoyle

The UK Royal Air Force’s first of nine Lockheed TriStar tanker/transports scheduled to undergo a major avionics upgrade arrived at Marshall Aerospace’s Cambridge airport site last month at the start of a £22 million ($45.2 million) modernisation programme.

Pictured on 17 November following its arrival from RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire, the TriStar will serve as a trials installation platform for the upgrade, with work on the aircraft scheduled to conclude in the third quarter of 2008.

To draw on the Marshall common core avionics system already integrated with the Lockheed Martin C-130 transport for the Royal Netherlands Air Force, the work will include the provision of new flat-panel displays, communications equipment and standby instruments, plus a replacement flight management system.

The second of the RAF’s 216 Sqn-operated TriStars to undergo the work will arrive in Cambridge in the fourth quarter of 2008. The UK TriStar fleet comprises six ex-British Airways tanker/transports and three ex-Pan Am passenger aircraft.
