PICTURE: Dutch coastguard receives two new Dornier 228s
    By Anno Gravemaker

The Dutch coastguard has taken delivery of two new Dornier 228-212s, which will be used to replace a 15 year-old example (pictured below, central) in providing surveillance over Dutch territorial waters and locating polluting vessels or other illegal activities. Onboard mission equipment includes a forward-looking infrared sensor, night vision goggles and liferafts.

To be operated from Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport under coordination from the Dutch coastguard centre in Den Helder, the new aircraft - registered PH-CGC and PH-CGN - were accepted into service on 11 December by Dutch defence minister Eimert van Middelkoop.

Flown by pilots from the Royal Netherlands Air Force and Navy, the aircraft can also be used for search and rescue missions, and to support military training activities. Additional crew members are drawn from the Dutch police and customs services

The 228 is still being manufactured under license in India somewhere. Don't ask me about the company's name, but supposedly they also want to restart 228 production in Germany again, after seeing the success the rejuvenated TwOtter is enjoying.
