Monday, 12 October 2009 22:16
The Irish Aviation Authority has said an Air Corps Pilatus PC9 aircraft has crashed at Crumlin East near Cornamona in Connemara, Co Galway.
The aircraft carrying a flight instructor and cadet were part of a flying training exercise of three aircraft that left Casement Aerodrome, Baldonnel at 5.45pm.
The accident is believed to have happened shortly after 6pm this evening.
The two other aircraft have safely returned to Galway airport.
A number of local people reported seeing the aircraft in difficulty and preparing to make an emergency landing.
An Air Accident Investigation team from the Air Corps and Department of Transport have been dispatched to the area.

Only reports from eye witness were of the aircraft flying very low(which could be normal during training). The vis was good but the aircraft continued into a fog bank near high ground and a couple of loud noises were heard. The witness and a friend got on some quad bikes and proceded to where they tought the aircraft went down. The last few hundred meters had to be done on foot due to the nature of the terrain.Due to the fact that they where now in the fog bank they found the aircraft by following the smell of fuel.
They reported aircraft wreckage strewn around and the 2 bodies.
The 2 ejector seats had not been fired and until these are made safe the bodies have to remain in place.
Civil and military investegators are on the scene to conduct a joint investigation and Pilatus have sent a company PC-12 HB-FOT to Galway airport....I would imagine with personel from the manafacturer.
