  • Wanted - Complete Cockpit for Young Guns

Hope this is the right place for this but I am appealing for a life-size cockpit that can by used by some young guns to gain experience to further them and keep them interested in the air force.

My son is in the air cadets (13-21 years) in the UK, he is based on the South Coast and is part of the RAF junior section, known as the ATC (Air Training Corp). The problem they have is there is no active RAF base located nearby and what with the armed forces cut backs they are even more restricted to base visits for flying than ever before so getting the feel of an aircraft or even flying is becoming a memory.

The commanding officer asked the other night if anyone knew where they could get their hands on a cockpit on a trailer or one they could position at the back of their mess so the kids had a chance of what it was like to sit inside a cockpit. Now I know this is a strange request but if there was someone out there who had such a cockpit assembly that they didn't had a need for any more and would like it to be used to keep the interest of these young guns then we might be able to find a home for it, and keep the next generation interested in joining up and keeping the forces at full strength.

The ATC is open to both boys and girls and when you see them in uniform they are just the part, they take pride in the kit and pride in their meetings, twice a week but there is something that is very important in the air force that is missing from their lives.... flying or being in an aircraft environment.

So if anyone has any ideas I would love to hear from you and more so the kids would be eternally grateful for keeping that little flame alight that they have a dream that needs to be converted into something real, thanks.

    - Hey there, always keen to help aviation lovers...
Its a tricky problem to be sure. I could suggest "other" ways of "keeping the love", but your request was specific.
England has dropped the ball aviation-wise thanks to too many bad defence ministers methinks. How great would the industry be!? If only...
My advice (for what its worth) is to contact as many training facilities you can, you might be surprised how many people will help a fellow aviation enthusiast. Similarly i would look up as many "private owners" of warbirds in the area, and also contact the organisers of Air Shows - quite often they know people who turn up with either static displays of full aircraft or, as you've eluded to, a trailer with just the cockpit of the aircraft.
Thinking slightly outside the box, you could beg, borrow and purchase as many second hand "peices of equipment" required in a cockpit and make a project of building your own!
