Hey since tornado season is coming soon, i was wondering if anyone has seen a tornado or been hit by one? For me iv had three close calls but never actually got hit by one, and iv never seen one with my own eyes. one has touched down on my road before thats it.
Yeah, I have been in a storm that has had a serious tornado, and it was in St. Louis!
My family and I were driving across the midwest going to Colorado and Arizona and happened to be in St. Louis when a typical Tornado Storm rolled through. We had to "take Shelter" under an overpass while the stormed raged on. We sat in the car for like 30 minutes.. waiting for the storm to pass. Honestly, that was one of the few times in my childhood life that I was fearful i might actually die. The kind of fear of that you have no power to stop what could happen.
But, we lived through it and I've vowed never to go back to STL.
When I was living in Fayetteville, NC, a tornado touched down a few miles from our house. I remember riding home and the radio wasn't on, so I had no idea that a tornado warning was in effect for my county. Lots of lightning, but I thought that it was a typical Carolina T-storm. Suddenly, a flash of lightning revealed a funnel cloud a few miles off. Thankfully, it lifted shortly thereafter only causing minor damage to the areas that it hit.

Yes, when I was a kid I lived in North Carolina. One day during a severe storm,my mother said she saw a funnel cloud out the window.Luckily it was in the air when it went over our house. The house shook but didn't get damaged.Later on my father drove us to a small town about 1 mile from our house. They were not as lucky. A few weeks later we moved to Maryland.
Another time we were visiting my sister in Norfolk,Va. A tornado warning was in effect. The warning siren went off so we all had to cram in a closet for awhile.

When I was living in Florida and hurricane David came through we had a tornado in the neighborhood that went through my back yard. Since I had the windows boarded up for the hurricane I didn't see the tornado but heard it come through. As the tornado came through, it made a loud roaring sound that reminded me of one of the older noisy jets flying over. After the tornado went by there was several seconds of calm from the hurricane winds. I went outdoors to check for damage and saw trees, fence, and power poles down behind the house. There also was some damage to the roof on a rear corner of the house. I later learned that the same tornado flattened a house a block away and also took the roof off a nearby shopping center.

I've been in more tornado warnings than I can count but have only seen any twice and heard a third.
The first time I was 9 or 10 and we had seven tornados touch down in the county. We could see several of the funnels from out house. Thankfully they were all out in open areas and the only thing destroyed was a barn.
A few years later my family and I were returning from Houston and ran right into a horrible storm. As we continued, I looked out to the right side of the van and could clearly see a large tornado about 2-3 miles away. It could only be seen when the lightning flashed behind it but the thing was huge, even at that distance.
The most recent time was October 5, 2003. I was just returned home from spotting @ DFW the day before. Around 5:00 that evening severe weather moved in and soon we had a tornado warning issued. Normally I don't worry too much but this storm was different. Soon the sound of the wind told me that I better find a safe place to hide. The only time I've ever taken cover in all the severe storms I've been through. The tornado touched down less than a mile away, ripped up some traffic signals, trees, and some rooftops but didn't do anything serious.
I've been disturbingly close to a couple tornadoes, not finding out till after they had come and gone. But as a weather/photography buff living in Tornado Alley, my dream is to be a storm chaser.
Here's my first somewhat successful lightning pic.
