BRAZIL HURRICANE


WASHINGTON/RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - The first hurricane ever reported in the south Atlantic swirled off the coast of Brazil on Friday, and forecasters said it could make landfall in the South American country during the weekend.

Although it was far outside their usual territory, forecasters at the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami were helping the Brazilian Weather Service to track the unprecedented system.

Actually, Southern Brazil is quite wealthy and has few favelas (shanty towns). That hurricane hit Santa Catarina, which is absolutely beautiful and has some of the nicest beaches around.

Brazil Storm Kills 2, Injures at Least 39
RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (AP) - A powerful storm lashed Brazil's southern coast, damaging thousands of homes, killing two people and terrifying residents who had never before seen such a strong storm.

The storm, dubbed Catarina, hit the coasts of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul states late Saturday with heavy rains and winds, before dissipating over land late Sunday.

However, Brazil still insist this is an tropical storm, not a hurricane.
