  • Disallowing forum entries with the word starting with "bench" and ending with "mark"

Not allowed either in the title or body.
Forum comments that contain that word receive the following error:

    Error while saving content: %1$s

    Error information: "500 error"

Why would such a word be forbidden? And ca we get a list of forbidden words?

First time I've heard of such an issue, and as far as I'm aware, there is no list of words the system prohibits by default. I've been able to recreate the same issue, so it seems it's not just a bug on your end. If you need to use that word in your thread title, maybe try as you've done above, and simply separate the two parts of the word.

This would not be a big issue if we knew the list of forbidden words, which I understand that you don't know either but it evidently exists.

Same issue, with other words, happened to me several times in the past and I know it happened to other users too.

When you've written a comment with a couple of paragraphs, and you get this error, and you don't know which is the offending word, it is quite frustrating to try to find it by a process of trial-and-error, and most of the times I (and other users) end up giving up and not posting the comment.

As you may have noticed I do most of the moderating here now, and if (big 'IF') there's a 'secret banned word list' it's unbeknownst to me or anyone else on the crew. More likely that there's just a bug in the code that's not allowing certain random words for whatever reason. Unfortunately that would be pretty far down on the list of things we would like FR24 to work on so while I will forward it to the developers, best to find a work around when you encounter it.

dlowwa, first of all I appreciate the work that you and the crew do to keep this site allative for the enjoyment of all us.

Second, it never crossed my mind that you guys had secret hidden list of banned words. I totally believe that neither you nor the crew has any idea of what that list contains. Now, a list of banned words exist. Such list is not known to you and the crew, but it exists. I don't think that it is a bug of "random words", that would be extremely unlikely. But it can be a forgotten left-over of some development stage.

Third, with my previous post I was merely explaining that the workaround you purposed is not as feasible as it looks. Sure, the next time that I want to write benchm4rk I will find a way to circumvent the issue (see?). The problem is that I didn't know that that was the forbidden word. It required quite of time of "research" eliminating sections of a post at a time to find the "area" where the forbidden word was and the eliminating sections of that section and so on until, many minutes later, I could narrow it down to the offending word. My main motivation to invest that time was so I could bring the issue to the crew. The next time I get this error and I am not using the word benchm4rk, there will be no workaround. I will simply abandon the attempt to share my comment. As I did several times in the past and as other have done too.

Finally, I totally understand prioritization. Now, I don't know how much access do the developers have to the code of the forum (if it is a packaged software, open source, etc). But with the little I know about coding, I know that having a concrete and repeatable example would make it very easy and quick (most of the times) to find the exact line of code that is triggering the error and from there finding the logic and list of words where that line is looking up. Again, I understand prioritization and easy and priority are not the same thing. Just that if someone decides to tackle this challenge, that would have a very small impact (if at all) in the timeline of other projects under development.

Again and again: Would I love that you guys fix this issue? Of course. But I would not say that I know how to set your priorities and assign your resources better than the JP / FR24 crew.

No worries, though I did read that as you thinking there actually was a list

I agree that it's probably some forgotten bug in the code, and totally understand your frustration at not being able to narrow down what the issue might be in a larger body of text. How often do you encounter the bug? In seven years of posting, I've yet to encounter it myself, though admittedly my posts typically lack the lexical discourse you might see in a longer thread.

Like I said, I've passed it along to FR24, but unfortunately even the simplest fixes take a while to happen. We have multiple improvements on the photo screening side that we've been waiting years to have implemented..

No often at all. As you can see I am in this forum since 2008 and probably the fingers of my hands would be enough to count the number of occurrences. I remember that other members also mentioned this issue and one of them also took the time to narrow down the then-offending word and publish it, although I don't recall who that user was or what was that word then (almost sure it was not benchm... well, you know )

Hello dlowwa, here you have another forbidden word to add to the list

5leep (or any word containing that, like 5leeping)
                benchm4rk

Weird. Honestly I don't have the knowhow to fix it, so best I can do is pass it along to FR24 so it can be #793 on their list of things to fix
