I received a free computer from a friend today. It currently is running Windows 98 on a Pentium 3 800 MHz, 512 MB RAM, and a 20 GB HDD. Is anyone running XP on a P3? I'd like to know if it runs smooth or is choppy. Otherwise I'll install my old copy of Windows ME. Microsoft says the minimum is 300 MHz, so I think it should be fine. I just don't want to install it if it would be all slow and boggy.
Thanks.

Not sure about a P3, I used to run Windows XP on a P2 450mhz with no issues. I don't remember how much RAM I had on board though...I think at least 256MB.
P4 for me
My friend runs a 900MHZ P3 with 346 (something like that) ram and a 60-80 GB HD. It runs slow but not choppy. I'd try to get a copy of Windows 2000, because ME sucks. they used to have it and it just stopped working. STICK WITH 98 or 2000. NO WAY ME-XP!!
Before I got my Centrino I had a P3 at 500 mhz, in fact my dad still has it, he is running Windows XP Pro with no problem, I just had Home on it when I had it. It works fine, no worries, go ahead and upgrade.
Still trying to figure out why so many people hate WIN XP so much. I've never had a single problem with it, and I've currently got it running on two desktops and two laptops. WIN 98 was really unreliable...I don't think I've crashed WIN XP more than a handful of times and those were minor compared to the "blue screen of death" with WIN 98. Maybe I'm just lucky.

I've had no problems with it either. I LOVE XP!!!!! same, 2 desktops and 2 laptops. 2 P4's, 1 Centreno, and 1 PIII Mobile! I'm just saying it's just not the best on a PIII that came loaded with 98.
XP ROCKS THE WORLD
and, no, your not lucky, it's alot more stable than 95
Well I did it. I wiped the drive stuck in an extra 10 GB HDD, and a CD-ROM (that was one of the catches, no CD drive). It runs great!!!! Faster than my AMD--of course, my AMD has more stuff on it. This one just has the OS--for now. Thanks for everyone's opinions.
