  • Iraq handed over to the Iraqi people

    http://www.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/meast/...ver/index.html

Now maybe prices on fuel worldwide will go down, the Iraqis now have their country back, and the Iraqi government appears to be going after those who behead and all that other stuff.

P.S. its my B-DAY and it just keeps getting better

While I am cautiously optimistic that this is a step for the good, I am absolutely positive that as soon as the Iraq thing is done with that the extremists will find something else to blame America for, or some other "act" to retaliate for, or some other reason to carry on with their "campaign" against the "Great Satan" and "infidels".
It's been going on for years...

lol...that's what I was thinking. I was wondering how things would turn out after the turnover....maybe we'll be able to slowly phase out the number of troops over there and/or lower oil prices. Wishful thinking...probably won't happen.

If the new Iraqi leader is not assassinated before six months is up, I'll be surprised (I wonder what the over/under is on that one). The insurgent groups will view this new gov't as a tool of America, and when it comes time for the first national elections, well just look at what happened recently in Afghanistan, 16 people killed by the Taliban just for registering to vote. A nation like Iraq needs a strong ruler to keep the various factions in line. With Saddam out of the power, there is a leadership vacuum in that country, and a civil war is definitely on the horizon, regardless of coalition troop strength. Look at how many of the former Soviet republics have been suffering through factional violence since becoming independent, the lack of a strong leader to keep everybody in line caused these conflicts to happen. Look at the entire Yugoslavia breakup and civil wars. There are shades of Iraq becoming a Vietnam, especially if the gov't in Iraq is unstable and suffers assassinations, terrorism, and coups.

This really is a great day for everyone. Even though the Iraqis really won't be completely sovereign for a few more years, I'm really glad that things something good has FINALLY come out of Iraq. Brilliant of the Bush to hand it over 2 days early. Who knows what he may have prevented! Although, for the record, I LOATHE Bush.
