  • Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada

Who's been to this city? I just got back yesterday morning from spending 2 nights and 2 days there. I went up for work. I had a group of about 20 people who had to go there.

I got there at in the early evening on Thursday. There wasn't time to do much except go out for a late dinner and a couple beers with some of my passengers. The place didn't have a big selection but Molsen Canadian ended up being a pretty good beer, I thought. While scouting for a place to eat and drink, they were I.D.-ing the heck out of us. And I'm 24! The only place to buy booze to take home is the government store so if you wanted a drink after it closed you had to go out.

The next day I had a couple hours to myself in the early evening so I went for a long walk. The part of Thunder Bay I walked through was pretty much the same as any American city in the midwest for the most part. Modest houses, Wal-Mart, etc. It got a little ineresting when I found the BAD section of town (Simpson Street) though. I was walking down the street at about 8:45pm and low and behold, there was a prostitute! I started singing to myself so she wouldn't talk to me; she asked another man passing on the sidewalk if he needed "a date" as I walked by.

I soon turned down another street to get back to where I needed to be and went by a group of about 10 rough-looking people. Nothing happened but after that I decided I needed to get the hell out of there. I flagged down a transit bus and went. It seems like the city has a nice bus system. There were plenty of buses that I saw everywhere I went.

That night I went out with some of my passengers again. We first went to the casino in town where they again were very strict with the I.D.s. I used my passport and the big-headed security guard even asked me to confirm my address (which aren't on passports). Ended up playing $5 blackjack for over an hour. I lost CAD $20 which ended up being about $15 USD.

After that we went to a club called "Warp 9" which was pretty nice. The beer was cheap and the cover was't too bad by American standards. And there were a decent number of cute girls there. I thought the music was good too. Me and my pax had an opportunity to be American assh()les when the DJ decided to do an "I AM CANADIAN" chant where we substituted "American". I did have a few beers but since I was the group's driver I took reasonably easy. Good time.

The next day was a day to sleep late and take it easy as I had to drive most of the way back to Iowa starting at 9:30pm. We did go see the near-by Kakabeka Falls which were neat.

    Interesting city.....

    Hey,

was up in Thunder Bay a few months ago checking out Confederation college's aviation program. Flew in that morning from YYZ and left in the evening so I didnt get to see much outside of the airport, the college's new Aviation center, the AC DC-9 thats parked up there (havent seen one of those in ages), and the college campus. Seemed like a really nice place IMO but from what i heard from the locals its economy is really struggling. Hopefully it picks up by the time I move up there for college next year.
Overall though it looked like a gorgeous city.

**Just wanted to clear this up because I wasn't specific...I did not drive the bus to the casino and club! We took taxis. I pointed out that I took it easy as a matter of professionalism, not because I was driving that night!

I lived in Thunder Bay for a while before moving here to Oregon. The marina area is a fun place to spend time at in the summer, especially on summer evenings. There are also a number of enjoyable hiking areas just west of the city.

Thunder Bay is a nice city in many ways but the economy was struggling when I was there, which was my major reason for leaving. It especially is a bad place to be in if you are in the high tech industry.
