Wow, you never knew about this? I found out about it when I went to the Canadian War Museum or whatever it's called in Ottawa. They landed all over North America. They landed in virtually every Canadian province and territory and all over the U.S. Most of them though just landed in the middle of nowhere in the middle of fields and forests and alot of them didn't go off when they landed. Most of the people who actually did die from them died from ones that didn't go off when they landed and found them later.

Happened here in the Pacific Northwest. I think it was Oregon. A Sunday School group from a local church went out for a picnic on the Sunday it happened. The father stayed behind to park the car while the kids and the mother went to find a spot. One of the balloons had dropped the bomb near where they sat and one of the kids had the bright idea of throwing a rock at the bomb. Exploded and killed the kids and the mom. Sad thing.

The balloon bombs were the result of a Japanese scientist discovering the jet streams. Some it it was the Americans that discovered it first, but I think the Japanese did. The bombs were incindiary (spelling?) bombs made to start wildfires during the dry months in the U.S. It was a clever move by the Japanese since they didn't have the long range bombers needed to make the flight--even from the Aleutians.

So yeah, not many people know the U.S. and Canada were bombed the Axis powers during WWII. Interesting tidbit in history.
