I'd like some opinions on this: I'm going off the college in the fall to study Aero. Engineering, and I still have to decide on what type of computer I'm gonna get. I really like the mobility of laptops, since I'm probably gonna go home on the weekends and I'd probably want to take some of my work with me. On the other hand, desktops tend to be a little cheaper, and I wouldn't have to worry as much about it being stolen. Any of you college kids out there have any input? Thanks.

Desktops vs. Laptops

The big advantage of a laptop computer is the mobility.
Disadvantages of a laptop computer:- They are more expensive than a desktop computer for the same performance
They are difficult (or impossible) to upgrade
They tend to be less reliable than desktop computers, especially the hard drives

I will always say DELL or if you want a Mac get a powerbook. Try getting an Intel Pentium M which is a beast!!! If not then p4's are the way to go. Ya i also agree, Celron is not good with Laptops and also make sure you are getting 256mb or more. I would suggest 512mb ram!!Only the dead have seen the end of the war-Plato

Dell
Toshiba
I would only buy from those brands. Compaq, HP, eMachines are not worth it. Sony--well--let's just say their improving. I don't know if I'd go with a Viao quite yet.
Pentium M is a great way to go. Be warned that when you take them off AC power, their speed drops dramatically. I believe that a 1.4 GHz (approx. equal to a 2.0 GHz P4) drops to about 600-800 MHz. That's how the Pentium M class notebooks achieve their long battery life. Another great thing is that they don't emit a lot of heat. That's a pain these days as P4 notebooks heat up quite a bit.
Apple's G4s range in speed from 800 (1.6 GHz P4) to 1.25 (2.4 GHz P4).
Don't upgrade the memory at the computer retailer's site. Normally you'll pay a lot more for memory there than if you were to buy it from say Crucial or some other place and install it yourself.
Alienware notebooks are not worth it. All you're paying for is the Alien sticker and pretty colors. You can get the same thing from www.powernotebooks.com--which by the way is one of the top rated resellers on ResellerRatings.com.
Much research will be rewarded with a great purchase.
