Actually, the series of flights flown by the Taiwanese carriers to China were one-off charter flights that hopefully pave the way for future scheduled direct flights. However at the moment, you cannot fly direct between the two countries.
Also Cathay has received permission from Hong Kong authorites to fly to China. China has not yet permitted anything and are unlikely to do so soon. Slots will also be difficult to get, as I am sure the CAAC is going to make it as difficult as possible for Cathay to start China flights.
Just curious, would it really be beneficial for CX and HK in general to have direct flights between Taiwan and the Mainland? I have a hard time believing that would be the case. I suppose CX stands to lose a lot of traffic if traffic rights between Taiwan and China were allowed.
