        Re:

It was just a small eruption. It just threw out a cloud of steam and ash, and that was it.

Although this eruption didn't involve lava (as far as they know) that doesn't mean there won't be an eruption with it later on.

actually, it is classified as the first eruption in 18 years. there was a similar situation in 1986 when this happened.

I don't see why everybody is calling it an eruption. Reports from the Volcano Observatory five miles away said that they couldn't even hear it.

I'd say it was really more of a massive Fart.

There was major excitement around here as word quickly spread about the eruption, but then the excitement tended to change to disappointment as everyone realized how minor it ended up being. We may have had a little haze in the air around here as a result of the eruption, but we couldn't see the actual eruption cloud from our part of the city.

The volcano alert level for Mount St. Helens has been raised to a higher level today with the belief that a bigger eruption may be likely in the near future. The observation area that had remained open until now has been closed.

Last Saturday I took this picture of Mount St. Helens as we were flying into PDX from MSP. Little did I know at that time that the mountain was about to come to life!!
