  • SARS Hits close to home

Well I was shocked tonight when I spoke to my cousin who told me her husband's company has quarantined him from coming to work for two weeks. He was up in Toronto this week for business but with the SARS scare they sent him home early and told him he couldn't come into work for two weeks. To top it off his personal physician recommended that his wife stay away from him for at least three days just to be safe. To me it sounds like a case of overreaction but it's really concerning that SARS is just across the boarder.

My sister goes to school in Toronto, but thankfully she went back home for the summer. I have friends and relatives living there and they're pretty concerned. We almost had a scare in my family as my father went to visit her and he arrived back home with a flu. Luckilly, it was just a flu and he has since recovered, but you can never be too careful or concerned.

Did your cousin have any symptoms?

I recently had a throat infection but ended up having many of the symptoms of SARS including a fever, chills, muscle aches, sore throat. I had 2 chest x-rays just to make sure, but it was pretty scary. Even now I am not 100%, but at least I know it was 'just' a throat infection, but I ended up having 5 antibiotics injections as well as loads of pills, a throat culture and a blood test. The doctor even thought I could have malaria at one stage! Not nice at all.

Colin, really scary during these days. My brother's home today witha cough and weakness and nausea!

I'm sorry to hear that. I hope it isn't anything bad. Remember this is the time of year when many people get sick anyway.

I'm getting there. I am still a little warm, but well below what would be classed as a fever and just below the temperature limits set by Cathay to go to work. I've still got a bit of a cough, but apart from that I'm fine and itching to go back to work. (It's been a month and a half!)

Btw, are you still flying, because i heard that Cathay had put its staff on unpaid leave.......

I prefer the A340 more myself!

A few weeks back some feeble old lady in Causeway Bay coughed right at me without covering her mouth or anything! Aside from getting very angry at her I became exremely worried that I'd get SARS. Thankfully I haven't and I have been hale for months.

I must say, I don't quite share the same feeling of fear and paranoia experienced by others. I still go out to the city, ride buses, ride the MTR, all without a face mask and my father still travels by air.....

                    Indian Airlines,

I am still on the roster, although I haven't been doing much flying! No staff have been asked to take unpaid leave yet, although some have done so voluntarily. That may come in the coming weeks if things don't improve.

One of my Dad's co-workers was in Toronto and came back and was sick with something (probably not SARS). As a matter of fact I don't feel so good right now...
