  • Lake Superior

Found this tonight while checking out the weather on the NWS site...just an observation...when most people think of the Great Lakes they don't necessarily think of ocean-type waves....
Some of you may be old enough to remember the Edmund Fitzgerald...a large ore boat that went down in very similar weather to this weekend, back in 1975. More info on that at: http://www.ssefo.com/
This stuff is ledgendary around these parts...just thought I'd share.

    LAKESHORE FLOOD WATCH
    MIZ001>003-006-007-150400-

    BULLETIN - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST REQUESTED
    LAKESHORE FLOOD WATCH
    NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE MARQUETTE MI
    500 PM EDT THU OCT 14 2004

...LAKESHORE FLOOD WATCH SATURDAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT ALONG THE
LAKE SUPERIOR SHORE FROM ONTONAGON TO MANITOU ISLAND AND FROM AU
    TRAIN TO CRISP POINT...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN MARQUETTE HAS ISSUED A LAKESHORE
FLOOD WATCH FOR THE NORTHWEST SHORES OF THE KEWEENAW PENINSULA AND
FOR SHORELINE AREAS OF ALGER AND LUCE COUNTIES FOR THE POTENTIAL OF
LAKESHORE FLOODING SATURDAY AND SATURDAY NIGHT.

LOW PRESSURE OVER SOUTHERN MICHIGAN IS FORECAST TO INTENSIFY AS IT
MOVES SLOWLY NORTHWARD INTO ST JAMES BAY BY SATURDAY EVENING. AS THE
LOW PRESSURE MOVES THROUGH THE UPPER GREAT LAKES ON SATURDAY...THE
WINDS WILL SHIFT TO THE NORTHWEST AND INCREASE TO 30 TO 40 MPH ALONG
THE SHORELINE...WITH FREQUENT GUSTS IN EXCESS OF 50 MPH EXPECTED BY
    SATURDAY AFTERNOON.

THE LAKE SUPERIOR SHORELINE EXPOSED TO THESE NORTHWEST WINDS WILL
SEE INCREASING WAVE HEIGHTS ON SATURDAY. WAVES MAY INCREASE UP TO 16
FEET BY SATURDAY AFTERNOON ALONG THE SHORE FROM ONTONAGON TO COPPER
HARBOR...WITH HIGHER WAVES POSSIBLE AROUND MANITOU ISLAND.

DUE TO THE LONGER FETCH ACROSS EASTERN LAKE SUPERIOR...THE SHORE
FROM AU TRAIN EAST TO CRISP POINT COULD SEE WAVES AS HIGH AS 23 FEET
    BY LATE SATURDAY AFTERNOON.

THE HIGH WAVES HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO PRODUCE LAKESHORE FLOODING
ALONG WITH SIGNIFICANT BEACH EROSION ON SATURDAY AND SATURDAY NIGHT.
AS THE LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM MOVES TO THE NORTH AND INTO JAMES BAY
SATURDAY NIGHT...THE WINDS AND WAVES WILL BEGIN TO SUBSIDE.

PERSONS ALONG THE LAKE SUPERIOR SHORELINE SHOULD TAKE PRECAUTIONS
NOW TO PROTECT THEIR PROPERTY BEFORE HIGH WINDS AND WAVES DEVELOP
    EARLY SATURDAY MORNING.

A LAKESHORE FLOOD WATCH MEANS THAT LAKESHORE FLOODING AND/OR
MODERATE TO SEVERE BEACH EROSION IS POSSIBLE FROM HIGH WINDS AND
WAVES ALONG THE SHORELINE. DAMAGE TO UNPROTECTED VESSELS AND
STRUCTURES IS POSSIBLE WITH THIS STORM. STAY OFF OF PIERS...
BREAKWALLS AND BEACHES WHEN HIGH WAVES ARE OCCURRING. STAY TUNED TO
NOAA WEATHER RADIO OR LOCAL RADIO AND TELEVISION FOR FURTHER UPDATES
AND POSSIBLE WARNINGS FROM THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE.

I grew up in Wisconsin and lived near Lake Michigan. Sometimes the waves would be very rough. I don't think people realize that.

I have the documentary you mention on tape- great show.
Ah yes. Hard to live around here and not know the song...although much is pure conjecture as to this day the reasons are unknown...

Gordon Lightfoot- Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald

The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they called 'Gitche Gumee'
The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead
When the skies of November turn gloomy
With a load of iron ore twenty-six thousand tons more
Than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty.
That good ship and true was a bone to be chewed
When the gales of November came early.

The ship was the pride of the American side
Coming back from some mill in Wisconsin
As the big freighters go, it was bigger than most
With a crew and good captain well seasoned
Concluding some terms with a couple of steel firms
When they left fully loaded for Cleveland
And later that night when the ship's bell rang
Could it be the north wind they'd been feelin'?
The wind in the wires made a tattle-tale sound
And a wave broke over the railing
And every man knew, as the captain did too,
T'was the witch of November come stealin'.
The dawn came late and the breakfast had to wait
When the Gales of November came slashin'.
When afternoon came it was freezin' rain
In the face of a hurricane west wind.

When suppertime came, the old cook came on deck sayin'.
Fellas, it's too rough to feed ya.
At Seven P.M. a main hatchway caved in, he said
Fellas, it's been good t'know ya
The captain wired in he had water comin' in
And the good ship and crew was in peril.
And later that night when his lights went outta sight
Came the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

Does any one know where the love of God goes
When the waves turn the minutes to hours?
The searches all say they'd have made Whitefish Bay
If they'd put fifteen more miles behind her.
              They might have split up or they might have capsized;
May have broke deep and took water.
And all that remains is the faces and the names
Of the wives and the sons and the daughters.

              Lake Huron rolls, Superior sings
In the rooms of her ice-water mansion.
              Old Michigan steams like a young man's dreams;
The islands and bays are for sportsmen.
              And farther below Lake Ontario
Takes in what Lake Erie can send her,
And the iron boats go as the mariners all know
With the Gales of November remembered.

In a musty old hall in Detroit they prayed,
              In the Maritime Sailors' Cathedral.
The church bell chimed till it rang twenty-nine times
For each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald.
The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call 'Gitche Gumee'.
Superior, they said, never gives up her dead
When the gales of November come early!
