I've injured my back 3 seperate times- luckily no herniated disks...yet. Had some nerve trouble though.

My phys. therapist gave me one stretch that I've been doing and haven't had any pain for almost a month. Surprisingly it's a butt stretch. Here it is:

    1. Lay down on your back with your legs together.
    2. While keeping your other leg flat, raise your leg into a chair-like sitting position.
    3. Grab your ankle with opposite arm, and knee with same-side arm.
    4. Pull ankle and knee UP and ACROSS your torso while keeping other leg flat on ground (you should feel an enormous stretch in your gluteus maximi).
    5. ICE, ICE, ICE! 15mins every hour if you can. It's amazing how much icing can help if you stick with it!

So yeah- that's what he has me doing. Meant for the lower back though- not sure if that would apply to your disk... Do you know the superman strengthening excercise (lower back)? I'm on swim team, which probably helps too- 3 hours in zero-G is kinda nice for the back...

    Hope this helps.

I've had three separate back strains, one a middle back about 6 years ago, and the other two lower back, once this summer and again this month. In fact, I just returned to work yesterday after being out for just over two weeks.
The two this year pinched my sciatic nerve and caused pain throughout my left leg...so I know what you're going through. I started physical therapy last week, and they found that one of my SI joints (where your spine meets the pelvic bone) was locked up, and after a few adjustments they were able to free it up again...and the difference is amazing.
Anyways, they have given me some printouts with different types of stretching exercises...as soon as I get the chance I will scan them and send them to ya in e-mail if you're interested. It may take me a few days to get them scanned as I'm pretty busy this week.
Have fun with the painkillers...I was on vicodin and a muscle relaxer...whoa.

Ever think of a chiropractor? I thought they were quaks at first but the guy I go to fixed my back. Took a wee bit of time, but I have not pain now.

nothing major for me, but i have had off-and-on back spasms and pain for about 8 years now. i never really seem to hurt it doing any hard work, but i will just be sitting down and all of a sudden it will spasm and then hurt for a couple of days.

chiropractor is NO NO for herniated disc, absolutely NOT, and it's been known that chiropractor can do more harm then good, all it is is basically a disc that seperates each vertabrae down the spine, when it herniates the interior seeps out and presses on the nerve root of the sciatic nerve, that nerve is the longest of the body and goes down your leg.

no amount of chiro can mess with that, nor physio for that matter.

Hey Longreach... I feel for you, seriously.

Today I felt I was in the verge of death after raking my backyard's leaves... my back was making my life miserable.

Having a backache is no fun whatsoever...
