No. More than 95% of Christians, Muslims, Jews, etc. are taught to be good to fellow man. You take away religion, and you have no base for that teaching.
Agreed, but do more that 95%, or even close to 95% of people of any religion follow that?

I think so, actually. While it's possible (and common) for both non-religious and religious people to be good, I think that nature comes out of our society's deep roots in religion, whether the good person subscribes to that religion or not.

I'm quite pleased with how civil this has turned out to be. I almost deleted it all after I had finished typing it, maybe I (as bush would say) misunderestimated you guys. My personal view on religion is that one doesn't fit everybody and that they all pretty much teach the same things (except for cults and the like that are based on crazy stuff). I think things start to go wrong when people start taking every word in their holy book to be the truth and begin taking things litterally. Thats where most of the fanatics come from. (again in my opinion). I have also found that those who are hesitant to debate religion are usually the ones who follow blindly and dont really know much about it.

Religion is a breeding ground for fanaticism...that's why I prefer staying away from it.
I think so as well. Also, it has always been my belief that if religion was gone, we would just find something else to hate about each other, whether it be race, ethnicity, political beliefs, etc...

I don't recall anyone asking you to. Don't take it personal, this is just for discussion.
No--you must have misunderstood me. I am not taking it personal at all and I see why he is saying what he is. It just wouldn't change my mind about religion.

Well if religious people don't follow the teachings of their doctrine, whether it's the "golden rule" or whatever - they're hypocrites.

Religion is a nice thing to have. it gives us a new focus on other things away from school, work and families. i found iv made new friends thru my religion. i do agree it can cause some violence, but if i undertsnad the reason so, is because they are tryign to convert the others to other types, and they kill them if they dont believe in it. why can't we accept other people belive in there own religion and leave it at that?
