I think Diwali is the spelling in the North while Deepavali is the spelling in the South. As a South Indian (from Kerala/Tamil Nadu) I probabaly should have used the latter spelling, but its all the same...

Yes, we did make Gulab Jamum...and we ate it all!
Hey you are from Kerala/ Tamilandu?? Me too! You speak Tamil or Malayalam? Where abouts are you from?

            Pete,

My family roots are in Kerala, but we all migrated to Tamil Nadu aeons ago... so we speak Tamil. I know a little bit of Malayalam here and there.

My hometown in India is in Kerala, it is called 'Palghat' (UK spelling) and Palakkad (Indian Spelling). It is on NH47, some 50 kms south of Coimbatore near the KL-TN border. It's a fairly big town; no Kochi or Thiruvananthapuram, but...it's there.

                  Hey Mohammad!

I can get by...namely I can speak Hindi really well and it's not too different from spoken Urdu so that is how I converse with my Pakistani friends here! Thank god for being from Mumbai, where you can get a mix of all worlds!

I speak Hindi and Tamil very well, and I can get by in Malayalam. So Urdu is not really a problem for me. I can also read Hindi.

What about you man? What can you speak?

that's really funny... I was actually born in Palakkad, and I spent two weeks there just this past summer. I loove Kerala so much; its such a beautiful state. I've also been to Kanyakumari before, also beautiful. I think we've been to that Meenakshi temple there... We speak a blend of Malayalam, tamil, and even a bit of Hindi (samaan, etc).

I might actually come to the Atlanta meet in July; it all depends on if my parents allow me to. I live like 45 miles away from ATL though.
