On Jan 1, 2005 The Illinois Department of Transportation doubled the price of tolls so more people would by iPass, an express toll thing. Most tolls that were 40 cents are now 80 cents. If you have an iPass, the tolls remain the same.
Just be aware if you come to the tolls that they are more expensive.

If they doubled tolls in NJ, I think some people would not be able to drive places... to get from here to NYC in the car, now $9.25, would now make the bus at $18.00 cheaper!

Those dirty rotten $#@#!*&^ @#$!
Too bad for people like me who aren't down there enough to justify an iPass.
the san mateo, dumbarton, and bay bridge are 3 bucks
the golden gate is like 5 or 6 bucks...
you guys are lucky
You are comparing apples and oranges. The tollway system in Chicagoland is an entire loop around the city, more or less (except for the lake side, obviously). A bridge or other piece of major infrastructure requires a higher toll for various reasons.
The Chicago Skyway, for example, a pretty crappy bridge, has it's own toll. So does the Mackinaw Island bridge connecting Upper and Lower Michigan.
You go across the bridges it is one toll of, say, $3.00. To travel the length of the Illinois Tollway would require somewhere around $8.00 IIRC prior to the increase. Now double that...
Looks like more traffic on HY 41 and the non-toll roads in that area.
Yea, I found that out just last weekend. They should hand out condoms at the toll booths since they are now F--KING YOU IN THE ASS!!!!!!
The Chicago area is so screwed when it comes to traffic management. They utilise no modern method of congestion control on the expressways whatsoever (years, maybe decades behind other cities), and now they placed a 200% user fee upon the poor who can't afford to have deposit and prepaid toll money tied up in their I-Pass (there is a very restrictive assistance program).
To drive from Iowa to downtown Chicago requires stops at four toll plazas along I-88. Dixon $.95, DeKalb $.95, Aurora $.40 & Midwest Road $.40. So it's $2.70 each way, or double that if you don't have an I-Pass.
