RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — Attackers shot their way into three compounds housing Westerners and Saudis and set off car bombs, hours before a visit by the American secretary of state, officials said.
At least 50 people were injured, a hospital official said. A Saudi hospital official told Reuters that an unspecified number of Westerners and Saudis were killed.
"Dozens of people were wounded and they are being treated at some 10 hospitals," the official at the al-Hamadi (search) hospital told Reuters. "I am sure there are dead. They are Westerners and Saudis."
The string of attacks occurred in quick succession, and a fourth explosion rocked Riyadh (search) early Tuesday outside the headquarters of a joint U.S.-Saudi owned company.
U.S. and Saudi officials said they suspected the Al Qaeda terror network was behind the bombings.
"We don't know how many are injured, but we received 50 and the number is growing," an official at the National Guard Hospital (search) in Riyadh told The Associated Press by telephone, without identifying himself. "We're very busy, we are receiving a lot of casualties."Fly Raleigh-Durham International, with direct flights on Air Canada, AirTran, American Airlines, American Eagle, America West, Continental Airlines, Continental Express, Delta Airlines, Delta Connection, jetBlue, Northwest Airlines, Southwest Airlines, United Express and US Airways to:

Saudi Compound Blasts Suicide Attacks -Minister
Mon May 12, 2003 10:59 PM ET
RIYADH (Reuters) - Suicide bombers were behind three blasts that ripped through compounds housing Westerners in Riyadh on Monday night, Saudi Interior Minister Prince Nayef told a pro-government newspaper on Tuesday.
"The three explosions that occurred in eastern Riyadh were suicide bombings," he told Al Riyadh daily, according to the newspaper's Web site. "They were set off by cars stuffed with explosives that were driven into the targeted compounds."
The U.S. ambassador to Saudi, Robert W. Jordan, told CNN television network that more than 40 Americans were wounded in the Riyadh bombings, which came hours before Secretary of State Colin Powell was due in the Saudi capital.

Up to 10 Americans were killed, as well as a "large number of others."

well it's obvious that the terrorists haven't been substantially weakened. they are still a huge threat and as we see, attacks can still happen. I don't see where Iraq fits into this whole war on terrorism deal. No doubt this attack was revenge....
Had the focus of been kept on the terrorists rather than going off on a tangent, this may not have happend.

I agree. My feeling is that Iraq was a bit of a sideshow to convince people that the war on terror was going on, due to the fact that real terrorist groups are next to impossible to track down and visibly eliminate. Its all about TV pictures and showing the next story on CNN. Has any one heard the Al Yancovic song 'Lets Bomb Iraq'. Rather appropriate, it starts with GW saying 'I'd like you to meet the man who contributed the most to my re-election - Mr So-Damn Insane (wonder who thats meant to be, no prizes!)I walked across an empty land

I agree with Katamarino. It's interesting to see how Bin Laden and Al-Qaeda are being cast aside in favor of easier targets like Saddam. It's sad to see how the public will believe anything if a crafty president makes up some b/s story that this is for the good of the world and that this country is a national threat when really the motives are more cynical. And our eyes are perfectly open, to the truth....
It is you whose mind is flooded with propaganda.

It is "us" that does not have a government that limits what we can hear and read.i.e. Non-Communist
"It's interesting to see how Bin Laden and Al-Qaeda are being cast aside in favor of easier targets like Saddam." Not cast aside, just not in the news. The hunt for them continues as we speak. Saddam was just too good to pass up!

Go back to school. The HK govt. isn't communist. It's a capitalist democracy. As far as we here in Hong Kong, the land of the red dragons, warriors, pointed hats, and pagodas there are no such limitations on press. And last time I checked, New Zealand doesn't have a communist government either. There the press is also free...Obviously you know nothing about the world around you. Doesn't really make you all that qualified to make all these statements then does it.....
Face it, the war on terrorism isn't in the news because no progress has been made there. As a result, attention is directed away towards Saddam, a harmless dictator. Yes he was bad, but no he had no pertinence to the war on terrorism. And subjective proof-less accusations don't count as evidence.......Hard for you to grasp I know.
