STARE deep into an emu's eyes and the word "intelligent" doesn't spring to mind.
But should one half of our national coat of arms be classed among the planet's dumbest birds?

According to a researcher crows and falcons are about the smartest things in feathers.

At the other end of the scale is the emu.

The world's first bird IQ index was compiled by Dr Louis Lefebvre, of Montreal's McGill University, from 2000 recorded observations.

While Dr Lefebvre told stories about crows fashioning their own tools and fly-fishing herons, he found few smarts in the habits of the emu, the ostrich, the new world quail and the nightjar.

Finding anyone to defend the emu is not easy.

In fact one Australian website, posted by Adelaide mathematician Alan Kennington, encourages the theory that emus have a few 'roos loose in the top paddock.
