Can i upgrade a mileage ticket, with miles?

Ok so ive been looking at some options for the summer and have come up with a few ideas. If, say i wanted to get a Economy rtn award ticket to somewhere in the USA on American, could i then use the obligatory 15K miles each way to upgrade the award ticket to Business?

I tried... sounded like a good idea at the time.. and they said "No." BTW, this was Delta i tried it on..

I know you could not do this with the (late ) Canadian Airlines, but some others may be different. I still get complementary upgrades if available on Reward tickets with NW by virtue of my Gold Status, Silver does not. Their system does work, as I was upgraded on 4/6 flights on my way to HNL last week, and the other two were not subject to upgrades at all (in.out of HNL)
