Heh...what a coincidence, just today we had some people from Montreal over for lunch...they were telling us about it.

They said it gets freezing cold in the winter, something like -25F. There will be a lot of snow, and there isn't too much sightseeing to be done (unless you're interested in stuff like big cathedrals or underground-linked markets etc.).

Better bets in Canada might be Toronto or Vancouver. Toronto is an awesome city, I've been there, there's plenty of stuff to do. Vancouver, though I've never been there, is supposed to be a very beautiful place (somewhat like Hong Kong, with the hills and the bay all in one place).
"The Director also sets the record straight on what would happen if oxygen masks were to drop from the ceiling: The passengers freak out with abandon, instead of continuing to chat amiably, as though lunch were being served, like they do on those in-flight safety videos."

If you ever go there, head over to Ste-Catherine. Lots of clubs/hookers to choose from. Last time i went I was with my parents and underaged though

You will be better off in Vancouver. It's really beautiful. And forget NYC around X-Mas and New Years, crazy and paranoid people, not to mention extremly cold.

When I was in montreal it was blurry, the sidewalks kept moving back and forth under my feet and all the chicks looked hotter than usual. Evidence:

while she's not ugly, she's not as hot as I remember her

            i'd hit it!

I've just been in Toronto in december and i'm going to Vancouver in about 6 weeks, so i really want to see Montreal and Quebec City, perhaps also Halifax.

i love the cold, i don't care about -25, i just want a nice white xmas, have only had one of them in Europe and would love another one..

              I'm not saying i wouldn't, its just not what I remember .

And I used to love winter too until I saw what one here (similar to MTL) was like.

Now that you mentioned it, Quebec City's a must, especially for history guys like me! The Old Quebec area is so amazing, combined with the way it looks out to the water.

and oh ya, stay in the Chateau Frontenac hotel while you're there. It'll only cost you a few thousands dollars a night

Go! Its fantastic place. Montreal has a lot to offer, from hockey (if they ever restart the NHL), hot women (Emu's picture doesn't do QC women justice), the underground shopping, museums & cathedrals (if you like that stuff), to (sic) the casino. Oh, and did I mention the women?

Monteal also has great restaurants and clubs. I would take Montreal over Vancouver any day, but especially in the winter if you're looking for ... well, winter. Just know how to dress in these Canadian winters and you'll be fine.

i love the european charm that seems to be attached to Montreal, was going to drive there in december but my back was having none of that! i can get a good rate from hotwire for a hotel over the period also!

                    looks a good deal.

yeah, Montreal did remind me of Europe quite a bit. It could have been all that French I was hearing

If you go there in the summer, put on sunglasses then go down to the Old Port to watch plenty of luvlee birds rollerblade half-nekkid. 'nuff said. (And do what I did: go during the comedy festival - that way you get the best of several worlds...)

Btw, "drive there in december" ... how the hell do you drive from Australia to Montreal?

That might be too much driving on slippery Canadian roads ... Then again, there are always plenty of seatsales with SG around so you should be able to get a good deal going to Montreal.

Lemme know if you're in this neck of the woods next Christmas - I'll buy you a drink.

How about trying Calgary or Winnipeg, the latter nicknamed WinterPeg ?
Downtown Montreal has something both pro and cons, half of the city is at underground level.
