  • Forum Maturity Level

I'm a bit perturbed with the overwhelming trend I see developing on this forum (the Off-Topic forum, specifically). It would seem that the maturity level of many of the posters is on a steady and rapid decline.

I'd like to remind you guys that there is a clear set of forum rules in place for discussions on this forum, and they need to be adhered to.

I've discussed this with Amy, and while neither one of us likes to overmoderate (or moderate at all, really), we have come to the consensus that acting like a child will get you treated like a child here, from this point forward.

In other words, no more warnings, no more pleas to tone down the rhetoric. Any post littered with four-letter words, personal attacks, etc. (of which there have been many, lately), will get you an immediate 30-day suspension from the forum. Ask Cory and Will.

A subsequent offense will get you banned, permanently.

This forum has, in its short time on the web, become a great resource for aviation-related discussion -- one needs to only look at the Aviation Discussion and Aviation Photography forums to see this. It's a shame that petty disagreements between a few people who show less maturity than a two-day old savings bond threaten to ruin the image of the entire forum.

If you guys would like to see this forum become a police state, that's fine. We can handle that. I don't want it to come to that, though. We are all people with a common interest -- aviation. I'd think that a likeminded group of individuals, all passionate about the same thing, could police and control themselves a bit better.

Well put Chris and I hope some of the members of this forum who usually act childish book their ideas up. Whats the point? Save the childish arguments for if you ever meet each other, not for this forum.

Well said, I think we were all taking advantage of there being next to no moderating here for a few days

Seems most of the problem is solved. A closer watch on the OTF might be a good idea at least for the time being.

My apologies for my contribution to that level of immaturity. I assure you all that this won't happen again.

Chris, I could not agree with you more. It’s part of the reason why I have not been posting as much lately. Granted, the situation is not as dire as A.net, but it could be. I’m glad you are pointing this out to set us all straight so we don’t forge the same path as others to the point where things become irreversible.

I think Jetphotos has a good group of kids (yes, even you Rich ), but we’re all human and emotions get the better of us at times. I see this as a reminder to keep things in check.

              Now, on with the discussion!

Oh please don't start doing this A.net style... I got banned for calling Indianguy a "motherfucker" in ONE post. He said that "Americans are fair game for Islamic terrorists, they are fighting for their liberation"

Sorry, but I wont let stuff like that stand...

Hey, Clovis. Nice to see you here! A.net is beyond the point of no return. I'm sorry, but that site is just ruined. It's people like Roy who are running the show and have turned it into the dregs that it has become.

As for the moderation here, what moderation! To be honest, I've hardly noticed it. Hell, I can't even find a link with all the rules! In all honestly, I think it's really a testiment to the members of this site when the moderation here is as low key as it is.

There are ways of expressing an opinion which doesn't involve cursing. If you want to get angry at someone for the sort of inflammatory statement you described: ok. Want to express any opposing viewpoint? ok. But excessive cursing brings down the quality of the content of a forum. Period. And by expressing yourself in that manner, then you are just stooping to a lower level.

What I'm seeing here is that people cannot discern the difference between attacking the person, and attacking a viewpoint. And this needs to drastically improve, pronto.

This has nothing to do with Airliners.net and their policies. I do not care WHAT they do or don't do on their site. I abide by the laws of common HUMAN decency...and if persons do not understand these basic laws...then they should not be here. Period.

                    Regards,
                    Amy

My beef, is that over there, people like Roy who post that kind of "kill Americans!" stuff, get off clean, while if we protest we get banned/deleted etc... I don't usually go about shooting off cuss-words, but this guys just justified killing Americans, and I'm not gonna sit back and be politically correct. I'm sorry. If somebody on the street walks up to you and spits in your face, I guarantee you are gonna do something. You aren't gonna go "Hey! That wasnt very nice!"
I'm all for being decent, and I agree that this forum has gotten pretty whacky lately, but there are some cases in which respectfull discussion can only go so far.

There are tons of people who's opinions diverge greatly from my own who I still respect alot and enjoy talking to. Take ADG for example, she's hilarious yet I can't stand her political views.
But Roy is at the same level as OBL for me...so...

Thing is...we're not on the street. We're on an internet forum. No need to get all gang buster on people.

Trust me, there are ways you can express your disgust with a viewpoint and get your OWN point across without resorting to name calling. By doing so, you are stooping to his level. Two wrongs don't make a right.

I've been moderating for 2 years and have never called someone a lowgrade, crass name...and you can be rest assured people know when I'm angry.

I have deleted part of your post because it was a direct threat to someone. What you would "do to someone on the street" has no business being on this public forum and will not be supported by this forum. If you wish to express blatant threats to someone, then this is most certainly not the place...and could even get into legality issues.

There are tons of people who's opinions diverge greatly from my own who I still respect alot and enjoy talking to. Take ADG for example, she's hilarious yet I can't stand her political views.

Clovis...I'm taking the time to explain to you, now, what is wrong with some of your thinking. This forum supports freedom of speech and a differing of opinion, but it does not support A. Direct threats, or B. name calling or cursing.

You seem a bit trigger happy with your keyboard...and while we want enthusiastic members here who might even carry an extreme viewpoint...we also want people to understand that it's not WHAT you say...but how you say it. Defense of oneself and one's ideas is most certainly warrented at times...but turning it into an all-out "Who Can Post the Meanest, Nastiest, Most Immature Comments" match is not and will not be tolerated.

                        Regards,
                        Amy

You know, I almost NEVER use swear words. EVER. Sometimes as a joke but I don't just run around saying "f you I don't like your username" or "f you you're Chinese"
I think in my 3 years on A.net I must have said "f**k" maybe twice, directed at someone. These were instances when the person had verbally attacked me.
What I'm trying to say is, in a heated discussion, when me or someone else just launches an F-word or the like onto the forum, BANNING the user right then isnt always the best solution. You have to understand that when people get mad, they won't think properly and, expletives may fly. IMO, the best thing to do would be lock the thread, or deleted the two posts and send the users a warning. That would calm things down without revoking the user's ability to post in the ENTIRE forum, like what A.net did to me.
Of course, as the situation was here its a totally different story. The fiasco between Will and Corey was never ending, and just contained lines and lines of cheap shots and insults. THAT warrants a ban, but IMO, the situation could have been diffused earlier then now. If we had stopped both of them a little while back and gave them a warning, I think they would have seen and understood how pointless their little war was.

Hope you're not angry at me
