Course it is, no one is arguing against that.
However, how an athelete goes out affects his legacy as much, if not more, than what he accomplished... it's always the last thing he's remembered for.

That's the way with everything, not just sports. Everyone wants to exit at a high point, and that's the point by which most people would remember him/her.

Jordan retired because he was getting old and out-schooled by young studs like Kobe & Garnet. He should have retired with the Bulls.
Bo Jackson had a hip injury that never let him return to his old form, but you can't blame him for trying.
Tona Harding was never that good to begin with so she had to hire some goons to whack her competition. The last thing I'll remember her for is "Celebrity Boxing."
