VATICAN CITY - The 115 cardinals of the Catholic Church have begun their sacred deliberations to choose a new pope. But their first try on Monday ended without selecting a new pontiff.
As thousands of necks craned upward to a tiny smokestack poking out of the Sistine Chapel, at first wisps of white smoke seemed to curl into the darkening sky. But then the smoke turned to grey and finally black smoke began pouring out.
