  • Connecticut allows same sex civil unions

    Blurbs:
The state House passed the measure last week but amended it to define marriage under Connecticut law as between one man and one woman. The Senate approved the amended bill Wednesday 26-8. The law takes effect Oct. 1.

Vermont is the only other state to allow civil unions. Massachusetts allows gay couples to marry. But those changes came about after same-sex couples won court battles.

This is certainly a step in the right direction for Connecticut and perhaps America. I understand that not every state can just jump ahead to legalising same sex marriage like Massachusetts, but these baby steps are very promising signs of things to come in my eyes.

It's interesting to me that all three states with provisions for same sex couples are all from New England.

Also interesting is that this is the first state to grant gay civil unions (or any such marriage-like rights) on its own free will, without court pressure.
