There was an article recently (I'll have to find it..) about a guy that started shooting directly at the sun while shooting sunsets with his 1dsMkII. It seems that unlike a film camera, a digital camera's sensor does not like having direct sunlight focused on it very often. Long story short, it ruined his sensor, and lightened his wallet substantially. According to his account of what happened, the lens acts like a magnifying glass (it is..), on the photodiodes and cooked them like an ant under a child's magnifying glass. This happened according to the article over a very short period of time. He did not notice what was going on because of the difficult exposures involved. He thought he was just "doing it wrong" when in fact, his sensor was dying a slow painful death until it quit altogether giving him nothing but white frames.

While I am not sure if this is a one person occurence or something more, it seems to make some sense. I'd be careful taking them unless I was recouping the cost of my camera from the sale of the images. I've also read of people stacking a few .6 nd's to help out.
